Muffler Questions

Hi guys, I think my car muffler, maybe somewhere around the cat converter got a hole . Was wondering if these are welled together or are they clamped together? Where is the CHEAPEST place to get muffler for my car (94 maxima gxe) in ny?

Thanks

welded, and just to make sure we are on the same page, the cat and the muffler are on opposite sides of the exhaust system(relatively). you may wanna check the flex pipe, i have heard alotta problems with that. if so, mebe consider a warpspeed y?

if there is just a small hole in the pipe or cat or whatever, you may be able to have it "patched" by getting it welded shut. It would depend on other variables, but just a thought. (if the hole is from rust, it would also just be a band-aid, as the area around the hole is also rust...if its from rust.)

your CAT is not welded to your muffler.
the exhaust is in 3 pieces from the factory
1 piece is the front pipe, then the Cat, then the whole resonator/muffler assembly that is 1 welded piece.

you should it welded first because the muffler comes with two layers. it may look like a hole but it may not be

Thanks for all your replies guys!

Well it was indeed a hole rite under my engine...but i didnt get it fixed. I went to a dealer auto auction a few hours ago and bought a new car..i was TRYING VERY HARD to get a newer maxima..but these cars are HOOTTT its impossible to get them at good deals there..

example:

98 maxima
142,000 miles for 2,700

I got a 2000 Sentra GXE for $3000...my only problem is after getting it we tested it..but its not getting into 4th gear..its floored, but the transmission is not shifting..the tramission isnt even singing..its like the car doest have enough power. So the auction mechanic is telling me its the o2 sensor. I'll know for sure by next wednesday if it is...if its transmission then i can get another car and the auction will take it back.

damn i'm gonna miss it here

wait WHAT?!

instead of fixing a simple hole in the exhaust you went and bought a 4banger auto with a half broken transmission, subpar-even-for-a-sentra HP, and a dead beam axle?!

if you've got money to throw away like that then dood i could use some

That's not a bad deal for a 98 max.
it runs about 1k more than that around here typically.

My max had alot of problems with it

I get 50-60 miles on half tank..i spent hundreds to get it fixed like new rotors, plugs, plug wires, tune ups etc. The Shocks/Struts are all dead. Power Steering belt needs replacing, plus axles may need replacing etc. It would have cost me more than what the car is worth to fix it up. It have about 155,000 miles on it..and the retail for a 94 Maxima GXE around NY with around the same mileage but with less issues like mine would run about $1200-1500.

95 Maximas with about 140,000 miles around here would retail for about $3000. At the auction i saw a few sold with around the same mileage for about $2700.
Another good reason why i prefered a smaller engine was because of the gas crsis thats hitting us. Hopefully a 4cyc might save me some money in the long run.

But anyways, if happens to be a trasmission problem, then the auction will take the car back and i'll try to invest in a Altima instead, or if i get a maxima 95+ with below a 100,000 for a good price i'll take that too. But maximas are very hott cars and everyone bids on them like crazy.

I'm also considering trying to RENT a dealer license, if i can and make some money i might buy a 2002 maxima.

you could goto Shea Stadium, cheapest around, not sure of a specific place though. Im sure some of the other NY members will chime in with a Shea spot. I usually goto a exhaust shop on Merrick Blvd in qns, 3D Automotive, not to sure how their prices are compared to other shops, but they do good work. All the exhaust work i've had done to my car has been done there. They also do performance exhaust systems too.

all the spark plugs, wires, rotors, and caps in the world won't fix bad gas mileage if they aren't the cause of bad gas mileage. did you ever test your injectors? did you ever test your compression? did you ever test the 02 sensor stuff? emissions stuff?

I'll keep the maxy, but i need to change the muffler..i'm gonna be shopping over the weekend for new muffler,

i have a 94 GXE, is it a DOHC or SOHC?

Here is a link on ebay i found:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/89-94...spagenameZWD1V

Do you think the price is firm? and will that work on my car?

P.S. I'm also gonna be buying a new o2 sensor

I dont know..i cant live without a maxima , will save up for a newer maxima down the road

All 1989-1994 GXE's were AUTO and SOHC VG30e
All 1989-1991 SE's were SOHC VG30e (Optional Manual)
All 1992-1994 SE's were DOHC VE30DE (Optional Manual)

(Though the automatic and manuals for the VE30DE were different from VG30E engines)

Seeing as though that ebay item has a buy it now price of $299, I'm guessing that's what it will go for regardless. Yes, it will fit on your car. Do you need an entire exhaust system? Where is the hole in your exhaust?

If you have holes in your exhaust MANIFOLDS, you probably have a broken stud and it is leaking out of there, and you will have to replace the stud(s). If the hole is in the Y-pipe, you can either have an exhaust shop weld/patch the hole, or buy a new Y-pipe. As far as I know, you can get a stock replacement from a VG or VE car (they're both the same stock), OR you can purchase a Warpspeed Y-pipe (2.5", Mandrel Bent, better flex section) I've seen two in the classifieds recently for $150. If it is the catalytic converter, they can be had for very cheap and your local muffler shop will probably have generic one's that will do fine. If the hole is in the B-pipe, I would suggest just getting it patched or welded shut if at all possible; depending on the size of the hole. If it is in or on the muffler, simply replace the muffler with something else (a stock replacement is probably your best bet) Most muffler shops will weld them on for under $50; mine was $30.

If you want an upgraded full exhaust system, Warpspeed Also sells that including a high flow cat, and resonated b-pipe.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for super faster reply. The hole is between the manifold and cat converter, by the flex piece. The flex piece is completely rotted out.

I took the car to meineke a few mins ago and they suggested i replace from flex piece to the cat converter and the o2 sensor..the price is $600 for everything including labor...i figured i might just replace it all and do it my self cause it seems like just a few bolts i have to loosen up...rite? lol

$600!?!?! You're getting raped. Do you have any Local muffler shops that aren't chains near you? Google, 'Muffler, City You Live in, State' and see if it brings up anything. I paid $150 for my Warpspeed Y-pipe, had it installed for $50. It has a superior flex section to stock too. (Along with everything else about it)

If you plan to do it yourself, I would buy some PB Blaster and go soak the bolts you'll be taking off and let them sit overnight or something.

Sorry for late replies guys, was out out town for memorial day weekend. Anyways, i visited a 2nd muffler shop that said they'll replace the complete Y pipp for $366 dollars. I was about to do it..then i called a friend of mine..who said wtf, if the hole is really small you can use "exaust tape". I checked out autobarn and found it for $4. Personally i thought it wouldnt do anything...so i jacked up my car (really high). I took a grinder and sand around the rusted area to get out all the rust and other stuff that might just fall apart..i taped her up and let the car idle for 30mins so the tape would melt into place and become one.

Well the sob worked! my car is now purring like a kitten..its not noisy anymore..i drove it around the place for 15mins and i couldnt hear a thing..it drives like a NEW CAR!!! I didnt expect that a hole the size of a dime would make a car sound soo bad..

Lets see how long this will last now....Hopefully a year should be worth the 4 dollars

p.s. might see if this helps me gas mileage problem

be effing glad you did that, over $366, my ***. a warpspeed y is only 200. and if you can put that "tape"(its just a band-aid, btw, not a real fix), you can replace the y-pipe.

when it starts to leak again..i'll replace everything...i can get the complete exhaust on ebay for $299, and just pay the labor at a shop, i tried taking off the bolts by myself..and it was really hard so i didnt want to force and cut it..which reminds me..i got to check sears for a electric ratchet gun, that might be able to open the bolts..

The ebay exhaust is crap. I ordered one and when I went to put it on the car I found out not all of the hangers where welded on or where in the wrong place. I ended up going with a full warpspeed system after that so if I was you I would save my money and go with the warpspeed.

to be honest, i wouldn't trust any of those generic exhausts on eBay. I would trust a shop to make a better exhaust(cat-back). and none of the ones I saw (just looked) include a y-pipe. and if i recall correctly, they include all new bolts and stuff, so if you break 'em in the process, who cares?(plus they are easy to get at a hardware store.)

Muffler Cement / Tape is NEVER a fix for a broken flex section. it will fail again shortly after because the tape/cement can't flex which is the point of a flex pipe :duh:.
