Identify This Electrical Component (Pic)

I found this thing taped up under the dash as I was looking for a specific plug / harness. What stuck out about it was it was taped up from the factory. Take a look:

My theory is it's for models equipped with the HUD (head-up display) option. Thoughts?

There are no prongs that stick out of that harness? My guess would support your theory that it is the HUD harness. It certainly looks like it, but there are usually eight metal prongs instead of a chip.

im gonna take a stab at it but i think thats for the clutch on 5spd equipped 3rd gens. most likely the switch where you have to push down on the clutch pedal to start the car (neutral safety switch)??? and to my knowledge i don't think thats for the HUD since Craig Brace did not point that out on his write-up, if he did then everyone on here would be doing HUD mods.

I think that the real reason that most folks don't to that mod is that the HUD is a fairly rare part to find. I found one on a 1991 GXE with a digital dash. Other than that, that is about the only one that I have seen.

Strange though, it has the same sort of shape as the HUD harness.

yes it is a rare part and i have been fortunate to find many in my local junkyards but without the digi dash. i do have about 3 HUD units with harness and computers in my shed which will serve as back ups incase anything happens to the one installed in my 3rd gen. but, that specific plug that is being talked about here might be part of the clutch pedal section for the 5 speeds at least i think it is.

That has nothing to do with the HUD or the digital dash. The wires coming out of the HUD plug directly into the power supply/control unit via the square shaped connector you are thinking of. That's not even a female connector anyway, it's an inline component, most likely a resistor or diode. For what, i'm not sure but it's meant to be there, tape it back up and leave it be.

e124 harness location. parallel diodes. i was using some in a custom corner lamp setup but abandoned it after i realized there was a simpler way to do it. but once again I have use for that thing, so i'll cut it out of where it put it, and then put it where i have found new use for it (for custom relayed headlights once i get my J30s installed)

back from the mountains. left at 1am friday night (saturday morning) about 30 minutes after tightening the last bolt on my max. still breaking in the clutch. i have a 12 minute driving video through a curvy section of US194 (between US421 northward to US221 i think, outside of Boone NC)
