Fun with timing and tapping

Ok when I start up my 92se, I hear several random tapping sounds with no apparent pattern, but then no more...is this possible sticky valves or what?

also i've assumed (and been told by mechanics) that the other clicking noise that comes up occasionally was the vtc sprockets...but I read that it could also be the timing chain tensioner. how can I tell for sure which it is...I believe that i tried to ground teh vtc assembly, and the clicking remained the same if that helps at all. oh well, hopefully my baby can get me through the winter.
