PS boot? or is it?

so I had my friend (BMW Repair tech) take a once over on my max while it was up on lifts, he noticed an oil leak from the valve cover, bushings need to be replaced, and the PS boot was completely ripped, I can't find anywhere to get a replacement boot so I'm wondering what it really is. sits against the firewall, very close to ground, near middle.

also, anyone have any thoughts on a valve cover oil leak? big job or small job?

internetautomar sells the ps boots (assume you mean tierod-to-rack boot). i have one in a box in my trunk from him that i've been do damn lazy to install. i dunno when i'll get around to actually using it so you can buy it from me if you want.

is it one of those 2 boots at either end of the steering rack, as seen here:

rock auto ended up being ~10.75 after the credit, not bad, just rediculous shipping for a small rubber lightweight item.

thanks for the help though

Easiest valve cover gasket job is the VE radiator-side cover, all others on VE and VG are bit more time-consuming.

Just did both valve covers on my VG, the rear one is certainly easier, still not a 5 minute job, but the front one requires the removal of the intake plennum, and the distributor. I also did all the vacuum hoses in the area, and the fuel hoses between the 2 fuel rails.

If you haven't done one before, I would allow the good part of a day so you can take your time and do it properly.
