Transmission problems

Sorry if this has been brought up already, but i don't really have time to look for it. So here's the problem. My transmission keeps slipping out of 3rd gear so i have to drive in 2nd gear and earlier this afternoon i started it and every time i put it in reverse, drive, 2nd, or 1st gear, it shuts off. Please don't tell me the only option i have is to get a new tranny.

Thanks

Your second problem sounds like Idle Air Control Value/Mass Air Filter problem to me. Try cleaning it. you can do it by searching the older threads, it has instructions to do so.

and it snaps off very quickly or fights and fizzles out. if it snaps off suddenly there's a rogue chance that your tqconverter is locking up when it shouldn't. the odds are slim, but it is possible, if there's a wiring fault or hydraulic failure of some sort.

if you get it to stay running somehow does it drive in a manner that is very jerky and harsh, almost like it's a manual?

and if you come to a stop does it kickdown through the gears (od to 1st around 1100rpm) roughly, and then just die when the car stops?

tranny seems to slip into neutral changing from 2nd into 3rd gear, but only when the engine is cold.
any suggestions greatly appreciated.
thanks.

do you think the soft or firm shifting options on automatics would have anything to do with it ?

there's no such option..... what are you talking about?

comfort/power? has nothing to do with soft or firm. all that controls is what rpm it shifts at

removing the harness for the line pressure resistor might work....
or try to have the shift cable between D and 2 and see what happens.

would it be easier and or less expensive to do a 5-speed swap?

slightly less expensive but not necessarily easier. depends how easily you can get your hands on all the swap items. and whether or not you feel like driving a stick all the time.
