oil pan issue

Hi everyone

I know i've asked this before, but the thread seems to have disappeared. Long story short, theres something that screwed up when an idiot shop replaced my oil pan, which caused the dipstick to rip off and get stuck halfway down the tube. I havent really had time to pull the oil pan to see why its getting chopped, but I need to do an oil change and am wondering what the nominal oil level is for a VE30DE.

(yes the concept that the stick may have been pulled into the engine is alarming, yet the car has been driving for over a year with no problems, other than not being able to check oil level.)

Oil level is in the manual that came with the car, don't quote me on this but it's about 3 quarts (3 and 1/8 if you want to rely on my memory) for the VG and I wouldn't think that it's more than a half a quart difference.

This mite be a dumb question but why dont you take the oil dipstick tube off to get the rest of the dipstick out? than you can get a new and than it just a thing of the past

Thats what I was wondering... It's like 1 or 2 10mm bolts.

3.75 qt. should put it in range. Go ahead and fix the problem, though.

I doubt removing the old dipstick/adding new one would fix the problem, It would probably make it worse as the oil pan has basically eaten two dipsticks. (i'm surprised it didnt wreak the engine)

anyhow yes I need to pull the pan and figure out what the hell they did. but I need a hoist before I can do that.. (unless i prop up oil pan, remove crossmember, then put jack stands under the motor mounts) im not sure how well that would work as the mount ends usually both rest on the crossmember.

anyhow, thank you everyone.

stop screwing around and drop the oil pan and fix it properly before you ruin the engine.
the problem is you MUST have the dipstick removed from the engine when you install the oil pan.

there's a small tube welded to the side of the pan that the dipstick slides through. If you have the dipstick in the engine when you bolt the pan up, it doesn't slide down that tube and gets pinched between the main bearing girdle and the edge of the pan. been there, done that. fortunately I noticed it on mine while I still had the engine on the stand.

some shots of my old engine and you can see the problem.

See the bent up U shape stuck to the side of the oil pan in the lower left side? (right by the 4th screw hole on the bottom row in the pic)
