Coilover difference

The difference in the ride fro a stock susp to a coilover is astronomical. I drove my friends BMW 5 series and couldn't beleive how sucky the ride was compared to my 4th gen and my neighbors 240sx with co setups. When I go around curves I hardly decellerate or put on brakes.

not to jack the thread but if i were to just buy lowering springs, is it as easy to install them on my 92 se as it was on my frineds civic, or is there something i should be aware of? im only asking because of what you guys said about the rear suspension setup being different.

I contacted D2 at least a couple of years ago. First to correct them on their continued assertion that an A31 coilover is compatible with a J30 Maxima, and secondly to press them to look in to developing a proper setup for our cars.
You can see how far along their development has come. C'mon, there are people who accept $50 for a wrecker to come and haul their rusted 3rd gens away. They aren't looking to develop anything for a 3rd gen.

well would it be better if i would of said..... couldnt you just buy lowering springs like you wanted to in the first place and not buy struts, just dont drive crazy and be cautious enough for potholes and bumps so you dont blow your shocks. mabye a buddy could help but it wont be too difficult just time consuming, im not sure mabye someone else on here could clarify that for you?.....would that of been better because now im contributing while also asking my question indirectly? and if not if i still should search through pages of the newbie thread to mabye find an answer to my question. wouldnt it be easier for you to say yes it is easy like a civic or no it is more difficult because (fill in here) rather than saying go here to.. then go back copy the link then paste it in?

well from what i've heard, even if you take it slow and easy around corners and whatnot, that you just can't account for the imperfections in the road, and all that stuff, and that the stock struts will still blow. Granted i guess you will get a little more life out of them than you would if you are FnF'ing around the corners... but either way, struts will be in your future.

i don't understand the whole physics of suspensions as well as I'd like to, but the consensus is that coilovers pwn any sort of regular coil-on-strut system.

and our cars were designed to be fun. if you are tip-toeing around town, afraid you will break something, just because you wanted to be cheap (buying cheap drop springs, vs quality springs and struts), well, that just doesn't sound fun.

The point is that it's rude to jack someone else's thread. we created the noob thread so you could possibly do a little research through there, as well as USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION. If you can't find the answer, then use the noob thread to post your question. don't simply jack someone else's thread.

Now.. to anwer your Q.. struts on a Maxima are pretty easy. the rears get a bit more involved, but still take about 30-40 min with hand tools. with air tools, I can do springs and shocks in about an hour.

As for putting stiffer lowering springs on old stock struts, that's jsut stupid. struts are a safety thing as well as a performance and ride comfort thing. what happens if you need to take evasive maneuvers but you can't brake or turn because your tires are bouncing across the ground and the car is wobbling around like a drunkard.

I had a car with pneumatic suspension that had failed. I went to take a turn and the car kept going straight even though it was like this \ talk about seriously scary.

I'm also looking at installing Ksport GT springs in my 3rd gen along with KYB's. I've read a few reviews and apparently ksports are decent. From what i've heard Eibachs are the way to go though. I can't tell you first-hand b/c i'm still running stock suspension, google it and see what else you can find out about it. Also for those saying you can't do the rear suspension on 3rd gens explain? You can put new struts w/ lowering springs on right?

You misread. That reference was with regard to 'coilovers' and the rear suspension of our cars. That the D2's people are seeing listed as being for 89-95 Maxima are actually designed for an 89-95 Cefiro, sometimes referred to as a Maxima overseas.
Yes, you can put new struts and springs on all 4 corners. Just not 'coilovers'. Unless a company designs a set for our cars.
