Seat belt light coming on while driving?

Okay so what causes this? I have automatic seat belts in my 92 maxima. I buckle my lap belt when I am driving and the automatic upper belt is across my chest. When I am driving that idiot light comes on saying I don't have my seat belt on. Where is the sensor for this? On the automatic part or on the lap belt part? I am thinking I need to clean or replace the sensor but I would like to know what causes this problem. Thanks.

i think the sensor is built into the buckle/emergency release on the upper belt.

the sensor is in a couple of places and they all can cause the chime.
