Oil Flushing ( Sludge Removal )
Oil Flushing ( Sludge Removal )
i know that VG and VE engines a extremely robust and last for ages. but on my search of ever better car care tips i encountered this web site and what it has to do with type of oils what they do and mostly flushing oil to remove sludge.
http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html#flushing
the flushing section calls out 0w20 idled at high rpm for 20 minutes is the best but has some issues as far as high mileage engines.
15W30 is mentioned but run for 500 miles to clear the sludge.
Main question is does anyone trust this info and or what is the best approach for our aging engines?
I will try the 15w30 approach on my car next fluid change and report back on the changes.

Ive heard of people just driving with in a lower gear for a few minutes. Like drive on the freeway for a few miles maintainin 4.5k rpm's. Never really done this myself tho so I cant say from experience if it helps.
mrkanda, change the oil and put a teaspoon or so of oil into each spark plug hole and let it sit a 1/2 hr or so before driving.
As for the oil flush stuff mentioned upstairs, personally I'd leave the engine alone if it's running well. If it's EXTREMELY caked up, then different story.. dunno what I'd do then. probably still leave it alone. put in good quality oil and keep driving. usually those flushes do more harm than good.

I've heard a hundred theories, some both good and bad. A couple years ago I was having a issue with a high mileage Acura that I had that was showing low oil pressure. Everyone on a Forum I used to hang on hoped it had a blocked passage and not a bad oil pump. Since I had nothing to loose I went with a flush since if it didn't work I'd be pulling apart the car anyway.
I dropped a quart of oil from the crankcase. I then added a quart of Dexron ATF. This is a pretty high dteregent auto tranny fluid. I then started it and let it come up to temp and idle for 20 minutes.
I then changed the oil. The stuff that came out was scary. Very think with sludge. After changing the oil I found that it didn't help. I ended up dropping the pan and pulling various other stuff and changing the oil pump. EVerything was super clean and the only sludge was some caked on stuff in the bottom of the pan and some on the oil pickup screen (This by the way is probably why the pump failed. Enough oil couldn't get by the caked screen and the pump ran dry).
After changing the pump the car is still running today 3 years later. I sold it ot a buddy of mines kid.
But, if the car seems to be running fine I would never had done it and I don't think you should either. Keep running a quality oil and filter and change it at regular intervals.
