Testing auto trans. line pressure

Will testing the transmission line pressure between the radiator and tranny give an indication of whether the fluid pump is operating correctly?

14psi is the reading you want?

Thanks all, You are being a great help as I muddle through this process!

never done it my self on the max tranys but iirc you remove the fluid pressure sensor and hook up the gauge to an adapter that fits in the hole the sensor came out off. :shrugs: see if the general maintenance sticky has the info in the autozone web site

you have two other transmission threads, I believe it would be okay to keep transmission questions you have in one of the other two

Yes,
I do have the other posts. You can tell I have tranny on the brain. They were getting nice and long, which is great, thank you all. I just thought I'd ask a specific question on this new thread, maybe attract some new blood that did not want to read through all the other info. Don't have a FSM, still trying to verify 14psi.

Going to the sticky (again) Thanks!

Went to the AutoZone sticky. Had to look up a '94 VE, as they do not have a manual for 89-91 VG's. Unfortunately, no information on trans for either series.

I don't have a working link for a manual, but I said no for various reasons:

You cannot measure line pressure on the coolant lines, and the pressure is a huge function of the box temp and testing/measuring conditions (gear selected and engine speed and also stall conditions assuming the TC actually still works).

If the TC is indeed funky the line pressure may also be severely/adversely affected so not much can be deduced from that.

I would suggest you keep searching the threads for a working FSM link and follow the excellent At faultfinding guides in there

Personally at this point I would pull off a cooler line, stick it in a gallon milk jug (or 2/3 liter bottle) , and start the car. if fluid pours out then you at least know the pump isn't totally fried.
