I'm thinkin lifters any ideas........... and what oil should I use and what oil stablizer product is the best for ex. Lucas, etc Thanx 4 help

no power loss unless you ground them out, then you have some loss in the higher rmp band, not much though..

yes they will fail in a terrible terrible way if left to clack for a long period of time..

you are looking @ quite a big labor ticket there mang, you might even have trouble finding a shop that will tackle the job..

i would guesstimate at least $700 in labor, maybe more in your area..

Got damm............... And last the noise doesnt come front where the VTC is directly it come from under the manifold on the opposite side does this make a difference

I have a similar issue with My 93 VG. There is a clacking noise once its warmed up. It doesnt have anything to do with oil, I don't know whether its coming from the Harmonic Balancer/Crankshaft pulley, or from inside the timing belt cover. Ive had people look at it, some say its from the crank pulley, others say its the timing belt tensioner. I havent had the belt changed since I purchased it, But I have had the water Pump done. It had 176,000 miles when I bought it, it now has 211,000 miles and rides like a champ! Anyone have any suggestions??

Is it like a ticking sound....or a snappy sound - could it be an exhaust leak that is hard to hear where it's coming from? Maybe you could buy a little spray bottle from the dollar store, and mix in 1/4 parts dishwasher soap to water and spray the exhaust manifold flanges....I did it to mine and saw a nice bubble show....

Well mine can't be the crankshaft pulley because the knock is on the other side of the engine and its funny All that noise but the car rides perfect

No its not an exaust leak, I drove one before that had that ticking sound, so I know its not that. It seems to sound like a diesel engine once warmed up a little. The crank pulley vibrates a little as I look at it. Someone says its the timing belt tensioner, and I thought it was the water pump, SO i replaced it. It went away for a little while, then once the car was running like normal it came back. But what ill probaly do start the process of elimination. Ill get the Timing belt and tensioner changed, and then if that doesen't solve it, then I know its the crank pulley/ harmonic balancer.

You don't change the solenoids, you ground them out. This procedure basically turns them off and in most cases, reduces or stops the vtc clacking noise.

The procedure is detailed on craig braces webpage in the stickies..

clarification point:
the solenoids are not the issue, it is the VTC assemblies themselves (they are under the valve covers) that make the noise. The grounding just causes the solenoid to constantly be engaged and sending oil to the assemblies.

nope, just makes the car a little bit slower cuz the timing is no longer variable.

it's not a speed drop... it's a power drop. you lose top end power. so your car doesn't accelerate as fast as it did before in the higher RPMs. it's not like you're driving along and all the sudden the car slows down
