Paint

Hey All,

I have access to air compressors/guns/etc.. and have decided to paint my car myself, with the help of my friend who has painted cars in the past (working in a shop). Basically I am calling out anyone who has painted their cars themself, and if you have any brand names you live by etc.. I am not however, looking for advice on what colour to paint my car.

My car is pearl white right now. It does not have extensive rust, just minor in the typical areas: lips of fenders, bottom corners of rear doors, as well as a few minor chips and dents.

I am either repainting white, and using a candy/flake additive in the clear coat or: painting black, again with a candy/flake additive in the clear... lots of coats in either case because i want this thing to look wet when it's done.

My insurance ends on April 18th, and I am not reinsuring my max until July, So rushing to have the car on the road is not an issue.

I will post before/after Pics of my car during this process and photos of the bodywork.

Well, I know this doesn't really help you, GARF. But this should help someone that wants to restore a paint-job rather than repaint it. The stuff I swear by is called "TR-3 Resin Glaze Compound". You can pick it up at Kragen. I bought a ex-forestry service Dodge RamCharger back in the day. The paint was rediculously weathered (if you touched it, you got paint dust on your hands). I used that Resin Glaze stuff and it completely fixed the paint. I swear, the paint looked brand new afterwards. It's kindof a long process to use this stuff though. Your hands will be aching from all the rubbing you have to do. You can use it on paint in any condition too...

I painted a couple of pieces on my sisters camry this past summer and while you probably already know it, prep is everything.

the more coats of wetsanding / finer grain sandpaper the glossier it'll look

also, get a gravity fed paint gun if you don't already have one.

sucks because I have a couple of pieces on my car that needs new paint.

guess the projects load up.

yes, i have two gravity fed spray guns, and all of the sanding equipment, i have painted before just not a whole car. I am taking m sweet time with all the banging out of dents, bondo, and rust control, I have all of the wetsanding equipment i need. I am not doing just an "alright" job in prep. My brother is also painting his prelude (bah hondas) around the same time as me (using the same booth and guns etc..) His car has an entire bodykit on it and needs to have all the transitions smoothed out and the entire car painted. so hopefully if this thread doesn't get jammed up and I can turn it into a general paint/bodywork thread *with pics*

The next post will have photos of prep work on both cars.
