i'm willing to put money on it that if it did'nt have those the tranny would last a lot longer than it does

I'm pretty sure there's a filter in the RE4F02A (VG) tranny. I remember seeing a filter in my parts list I think. It's some levels down though - not accessible unless you dismantle it. But I'll keep you posted as i'm doing the overhaul on it.

I totally agree. It just makes no sense. Obviously they realized it was ridiculous and changed the design on the newer models. Having to completely dismantle the tranny to remove the filter is insane.

I just change out the fluid every other oil change. I don't care if it's overkill. If it gives me any issues again, I will never own another 3rd gen auto.

i think there's a pic around here somewhere where it has the vavlve body off the tranny.
then it shows a small screen on the valve body...some consider that to be the filter.

I'm pretty sure the Filter is PN# 68800. It can be swapped out...when doing an overhaul that is.

Unless my notes are wrong and it's for the RL4F02A only...but it appears to be for both models.

Yeah, it's brilliant! They knew what they were doing. Filter is impossible to change, if you don't change the fluid religiously the filter gets clogged and blammo, tranny needs rebuild or replacement. It's just good ole planned obsolescence.

It's not a clogged filter that causes the transmission failure on these cars, it's weak **** internals. The vg transmission was designed for a 4 cylinder car (the stanza), they just dumped the internals from it into a 6 cylinder housing..
