I have heard alot lately from friends about the weak transmissions in these cars. I looked into it and found out that this is true.
To avoid this, a transmission cooler has to be installed.
- What is this?
- Who can do it?
- Is is expensive?
- What are the symptoms?
- How do you know if it was done by previous owner?

I luv my maxima, it is a sweet ride and want to take good care of my baby!! So any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Denver

I dont have one but am planning on getting one. I think the trannies in the 89-91 are weaker then 92-94. but I have heard hayden is a good brand. from what i know they are not too much work to install so it may not be too expensive to have a shop do it. i am planning on doing mine myself. I would guess the previous owner wouldnt have installed one. -block

I have a 92 maxima and my car has a Tranny Cooler. I have been having tranny problems for the past year. I just recently asked the mechanic if a new TC would help and he said that I should look into it if I get the VB recalibration. He told me that the car already had one though. We worked out a deal to where they would convert my car to a 5-speed so I'm not worried about the TC. Good luck with your tranny's because I think I have had the worst out of any. I cant wait till I get my 5-speed so I dont have to worry about my clutch plates burning up every 2 weeks like they have for the past year.

92GXE, touring wing, 18” racing wheels, Port&Polished intake, custom intake, custom yellow interior, racing seats, back seats taken out and replaced with subs and amps, NOS kit, Suspension tech. Lowering springs, custom grille, soon to be custom painted and have the whole engine rebuilt for big shot NOS and custom SC and tranny converted to 5-speed.

A transmission cooler is a small radiator that the transmission fluid runs through. From the factory (2nd and 3rd gen Max's) there is a single "U" loop of tubing, for cooling the tranny fluid, that runs in front of the radiator. An aftermarket cooler can either be hooked up in series with the existing cooler, or to replace the minimal original cooler.
A cooler is most useful for sustained heavy loads: long hills, towing, "road racing", etc., and not necessary for 1/4 mile drags.

Every one says tranny coolers are great, and only cost about $40 at Pepboys for a Hayden 403. I was wondering how much it would cost to get it installed at a shop since I don't really have time right now to do it myself, and its getting kinda cold.

they're not that hard to install, but you have to know what you're doing...
there are instructions in the box too..
basically it's
1. figure out where to mount cooler in front of OEM radiator..
2. attach hoses to cooler and connect into stock system
3. fasten cooler to radiator with supplied zip ties
4. start car, run for a few minutes, check for leaks, add tranny fluid as necessary.

that's about it.. plan 1.5- 2 hrs to do the job though. it took me about an hour, and that was with no jack, and zip ties that didn't want to cooperate.

Matt,
Is the correct model number 403 for the Hayden? What about the brand that you have? Is that at Pep Boys too, for around the same price?

Mine is a B&M.. I got it through carparts.com for about 2/3 the price of the Hayden..
it's also larger than the Hayden I believe..
this is the biggest one you can get that will fit.. any larger (even 1/4" larger) and you'll have to bend brackets in front of the radiator to make it fit. it just barely squeezes in there.

Matt...

Are the instuctions that come with the cooler sufficient (if you sort of know what you are doing...) or does it require good explanation? Has anyone done a write-up on this? Man, I'm trying to get all the information I can about these different tasks, and then as the parts start to come in, just whip out the instructions and go to work, or in the case of those more complicated jobs, get someone qualified, that (that can read the directions...)go to work for me
