Why is turbocharging a NA car expensive?

[rant]
Can anyone for the love of god tell me why I have to spend over $3k just to get a reliable turbo setup? [/rant]
I've been compiling a list of parts needed for a turbo conversion on a VG. Basically what I have come up with almost mirrors what the F-MAX turbo kit is to the SR20DE and KA24DE. Below is what I'd buy for my maxima (assuming I had one ) and the estimated cost. Come to think of it as long as you don't want more power than the stock T3 provides you should be ok. I almost wish a DSM 16G would bolt on to the nissan exhaust manifold, I've seen so many of those turbo's for sale its not funny. They flow more power than a T3 but less than a T4, it should be enough for 96-100mph traps given 15-20psi of boost. However I'm sure an aftercooler would be needed. So far I'm thinking of a liquid to air IC given the space constraints.

1. VG30ET exhaust manifolds $300
2. T3 or T25 in good condition $100-250
3. 2.5in downpipe to cat $200-350
4. BOV (Blow Off Valve) $100-400
5. tial wastegate $300
6. turbo outlet to throttle body/aftercooler piping $50-250
7. turbo inlet piping from MAF $30-100
8. turbo oil/coolant lines + oil/water temp gauges $100-250
9. 6 370cc injectors $400-800
10. Z32TT/walbro 255 fuel pump $200-350
11. JWT ECU with turbo program $600
12. liquid to air aftercooler or air to air IC $1000-1500
13. Boost, EGT guages $300
14. Labor for aftercooler $500-1500
15. ACT clutch $350
16. EL boost controller $200-500

have you tired getting the parts used or remanufactured?

some of those prices seem high to me 2.5 inch down pipe to cat can be done for about $150 here in atlanta

These aren't what I would pay ;)

This is to give those that don't do enough and through research for a good estimate. I figure the entire exhaust from the manifolds to the muffler with a turbo would cost about $500-800. The fuel/ignition control for the turbo is going to be in the $800-1300 range (includes 370cc injectors and turbo JWT ECU). Add the boost controller, tial wastegate (boost creep sucks with other wastegates), BOV and thats another $500-900 there. I don't think the prices are that far off though.

$300 For manifolds? WTF?
I paid $120 for a used T3, manifolds, and all the coolant and oil lines to hook up the turbo!

I'm sure that is true but what are you going to do about the cracked front manifold. Almost every Z31 I've run into has the same crack in the front manifold. However I know a way around that. Matt you gotta email me if you see something for a good price. Don't leave me hanging.
