Has anyone modded there belts from auto to permanent mounting on the pillar? These are stupid. You get the false sense of security as they come across the chest, but the lap belt is what's important.

Yeah go to canada and pull a conversion. I've thought about doing it myself. I had a canadian max awhile back and I miss those belts for the same reason.

Honestly i dont mind them as much as my passangers do... i never have to think about buckeling up...Truthfully the only time i put my lap belt on is at the track otherwise it doesnt get latched...very unsafe.....but add that along with no abs and no airbags and wow....im rolling in a death trap lol...

I fail to understand how these are a hassle.I simply wait to get out (that is a total of two seconds each time, and less than half a dozen times a day), and I usually have something to do while I wait
Since I am already sitting in the car when I start it, I am already in position to be out of the way when it retracts (5 speed ftw!).

the only way I could see this being a real problem is if you are extremely short. if that is the case, a manual conversion would only make things worse.

Man, I agree. I love my auto seatbelts. I never understood the general public's distaste for them.

Wouldn't you rather have auto seatbelts than manual ones that stop retracting after a few years and you have to manually retract them lest they flop around all over your seat or in the door jamb, etc?

ive gotten used to them, and by the time you squirm and turn your butt around in the seat to get out of the car, the belt has already retracted away from you

only thing that sucks is when you clock your head on the seat belt clip while getting out of the car when the belt is unbuckled, not noticing where it is w/o the belt there

yep. quite a few threads about it.
most places won't cover just the annoying chime, tho (the only nissan I tried said it wasn't actually a safety issue).

i have a set of faded reddish manual seatbelts that i got off a random canadian maxima i found at the junkyard. never got around to putting them in tho

my main gripe about the auto belts is that the rear stopper leaves them positioned way too high... if the track extended another 4-6" down the b-pillar they would be just fine for me. But as they are, the only place the belt touches me is just under my ribcabe on my right side... which has, over the years (in conjunction with the headset cord when i worked in fast food), caused a permanent pressurepoint to form there.

I literally have marks on my interior door jamb from the retracting rebound.

...Ehhh... but you still have to remember to buckle the lap belt. People who get in my car never realize they have to buckle the lap belt and I always have to tell them to do so. If you get in a crash without the lap belt you'll likely be decapitated

This is my main problem. The car is actually my daughter's and I worry she never uses the lap belt.

Maybe showing her a couple of those graphic accident/driver safety videos on YouTube etc. will ensure that she does.

yes.
last year my brothers G20 (infiniti) had it's auto seat belts fail.
Drove into infiniti they said they had to order the part (big surprise there) and would call me to schedule for the repair and loaner car once it came in. A few days later I drove out of there in a G35x . sadly nissan dealers don't take care of people like that.

You guys know that 1 in 10 celebrities are maimed in 3rd gen Maximas by not wearing the lapbelt right?

Brett Favre's near-fatal accident was in a 3rd gen, that model a while back (can't for the life of me remember the name) was in a 3rd gen, etc.

Hell it had been so long since I had rode in one that had automatic seat belts. When I got in mine I forgot all about them. They scared the hell out of me for a second. I thought the car was getting ready to strangle me.

Do they even properly work if used with the lap belt? They don't even feel like they are on you, compared to other cars. They are definatly great against seat belt tickets. Cops usually don't look for the lap belt.

I love my auto seat belts. Being that buckling up is the law down here in South Carolina, It is a great feature to have. I never have to worry about getting a ticket for not having on a seat belt!! I was looking a 4th generation model maxima, and It didnt come with tha automatic seat belts, I came with that 2 strap belt that you have to dig in the floor to find, if you have to put it on in a hurry!!LOL I didnt like that too much!

I guess I have owned a Maxima so long, I don't really even think about it much.

Honestly, I think I like regular seat belts better, but the auto ones aren't too bad

Most passengers are kind of freaked out by the auto belt, especially people that haven't been in my car before. I don't think there are many cars on the road with them still -- maybe like under 5 percent. Between the seat belt and the unusual inner door handle being "hidden" in the arm rest, I have a lot of fun with new passengers getting in and out!

Got my 3rd gen with 195k miles on it, yes a 93 and those things work like new without any lag or hesitation. I've actually NEVER seen one go bad. Only Ford Escort automatic seatbelt motors go bad and Nissan Stanza's (or 240SX) show signs of lag from what I've seen

Heck for some reason at times, my shoulder (auto) belt locks up. Therefore it can be as safe as a manual one. I don't want to test that though.
This is only bad when it locks up before the belt moves to its final position. That's when I have to unbuckle it.

basically there is no chance of a US dealer honoring a warranty on a manual seatbelt swap?
