Hi, does anyone here know where I can find instructions on how to remove all the bose speakers, tear out the amps and replace them with aftermarket speakers? I need detailed instructions because ive never done this before. The instructions I found on a few maxima sites for removing the head unit worked great, now i wanna get rid of the speakers. Im going to get 4 speaker harnesses as well to make all this work because I can not and will not rewire that car.

If anyone has any info let me know here..

Thanks

Instructions (long)

Back speakers are cake. Open the trunk and look at the top of hit. You'll see two speakers and two black boxes next to them. Unscrew the four bolts holding in each of the speakers and disconnect the wire connectors. Then do the same for the amps, disconnecting the blue wire harnesses. You'll notice that there are two pairs of wires coming into the harness: two skinny (black, white?) are the signal from head unit, and two fat (black, red?) are the power and ground to amp. Screw any 6x9 speaker into the opening and connect the terminals to the skinny wires in the harness (be creative). I'm not sure which colors are positive/negative, but just hook it up and try both.

Front speakers suck. The speakers and amps are contained in a black plastic housing in the doors, which serves as a ported box for the Bose speakers. Disconnect the harness and remove this unit. Unscrew the three screws holding in the speakers and grilles, disconnect the connectors, and remove speakers. Now it gets tricky. Any new speakers you put in there won't match in size or screw pattern, so you'll have to adapt. I fit 5 1/4" speakers in that opening by drilling new holes for screws. Although I didn't have to make the hole any bigger, I ended up cutting a large hole in the back of of the speaker housing. Why? The enclosure was originally designed for a little Bose speaker, and when I put in a bigger Infinity speaker it moved too much air for the little port. Cutting a hole in the back allowed the air to flow freely, and eliminated the ultra-****ty vibrating sound. Again, just try both of the skinny wires to determine proper positive/negative. If you're really creative you could try to build your own bracket/enclosure, but I haven't had the time or will to try it.

what I did was disconnect the amp and remove the speaker, rewire the the speaker straight w/o amp and put it back in the ported amp box. works fine i used the bose speaker. and for the back i did the same except put some pioneer 6x9's in.

Re: Instructions (long)

Hrmmm.. What size speakers would fit in the front perfectly? I got 4" speakers.. I have a 1990 gxe and I thought I read somewhere it takes 4.5" speakers? Please correct me if im wrong so I can return them to circuit city ASAP.

hey block, so your back speakers work without the bose amp? one of my bose amps blew and now the speaker wont play, i assumed because it didnt have enough wattage without the amp. i got some pioneers also and would like to hook them up, but i figured it wouldnt work unless i put another amp to it. so if i just rewire w/o the amp it should work?

The speaker will still work because he has already installed a new head unit. The 4" will work, just cut a larger square piece of metal and attach it, sealing it with some weather strip or something. You have to angle the speakers slightly to avoid the screws you used to secure the metal piece, but drill new holes and attach speaker. I removed my amps and ran new wires inside the box, even put some pillow stuffing in there. I just have MTX 4"'s but they really sound good. This is what I did, only a suggestion.

yeah i had a new head unit also. but i didnt try to rewire it, just figured that since the amp didnt work, thats why the speaker wouldnt play. will it only work after removing the amp and completely rewiring w/o any part of the amp? know what i'm saying?
