What is the correct way to get injectors out of the fuel rail?

What is the correct way to get injectors out of the fuel rail?

I have been looking through previous posts to figure out the correct way to pull or disassemble a fuel injector from the fuel rail. Some people suggest that you grip the plastic hood or plug part and twist and pull with vice grip pliers, I tried that method today at the junk yard, and ended up shredding 3 or 4 injectors, and they still didnt come out. I would like to know the correct way to do this removal before I do my own injectors. If anyone has any pictures that would be great, or any suggestions are helpful.

are you reusing them or not? if not, beat them out with a hammer. you might need a tiny (6mm-ish) socket for the 93-94 style to concentrate the force on the injector tip but the early style ones stick way out from the rail so you can't possibly miss them.

If you were reading my post, I said to use a bench vise, with the jaws side of the vise (not the smooth side) and very lightly squeeze the two flats of the injector. hold the rail next to the injector, do a small twisting action to break the o-ring seal, and pull.

There is a tool to pry them out, but that costs $$.

Well I found a rail of 6 injectors at the junk yard, and I was trying to get at least 3, they came out of a car with only 130,000 miles. Ive never done injectors before so I was praticing on the rail at the junk yard to see if I can get at least 3 out for temporary use until I can afford to get some new ones. But it seems like an easy job If I can get the 3 from the junk yard. Then I will install them probaly in the morning and get some new O-Rings from the dealer, along with some vascaline.

130k on injectors is a lot. I would bite the bullet and just get the new ones.

eh, 130k JY injectors is still better than remans. people turn in cores to "reman" places as a whole set because they had some dead injectors... so if one's dead the rest can't be far behind. just cuz they 'test' good on the bench doesn't mean they will stay good a long time. cars go to junkyards for various reasons, not necessarily due to injector problems, so maybe all the injectors still worked fine, and could work fine for at least long enough to save up for new ones.

and if he's doing the labor, it's not THAT bad to do injectors. you just don't wanna pay a mechanic twice to do it.

+1 on this. I also destroyed 4 out of 6 used injectors (with 3 being dead anyway) before coming across the 'vise method'. It was a breeze and you can't really tell they were 'extracted'. My vise has flat jaws so no marks were left. I had to spray Liquid Wrench from the top and twist them around to get LW in and it took me couple minutes/injector. I also replaced recently one of my rear ones this way right on the car without taking fuel rail out.

I wouldn't reccomend reman's either...

Yah You are right, this particular car was pretty clean on the inside, it almost looked brand new, and it was wrecked pretty bad in the front, only had 130,000 miles. This is a maxima and to me that is pretty low miles for a car that Ive seen and heard to run for well over 300,000 miles. Ive even seen one that had 400,000 miles on it. Since most of my injectors lasted for over 225,000 I think its a good to get the junkyard ones at least for now.

Well The ones I got from the junk yard I beat them with a hammer and was planning to reuse those. I got 4 from there, All the ends where the fuel comes out were damaged. Its some type of plastic looking part. I went to the dealer and they told me that I would have to buy a new injector, and that they didnt carry that part seperate.

I'm not sure about correct way but the easiest way for me was using a big philip head screw driver. From behind the connector side, just slip it in there and give it a gentle twist, it should pop loose. You will get a small dent but nothing major if you do it right.

Injectors get 'frozen' in by age and all the built up crud and carbon between the injectors and the rail pocket. Best way is pull injectors is to remove the injector rails, clamp them in a vice, and push out the injectors from the bottom side. I had to drive mine out this way. I used a piece of wood dowel where I drilled a hole in the center larger than the injector Pintel cap, which is fragile. Then gently tapped the wooden dowel with a hammer to force the injector out. Got all 6 of mine out this way with no damage.
