Speedometer/Pinon

My Speedometer is going "berzerk" when I drive. I guess one of two things could be happening, either the speedometer itself is broken/breaking or the speed sensor mounted on the transmission is going bad.

Question 1: What's the best way to tell which is going out? The speedometer costs about $220 to replace, the sensor about $170. I don't want to pick the wrong one.

Question 2: Can the speed sensor (also called the speedometer pinon I think) be cleaned rather than replaced?

Thanks for your help

John

If your speedo is waggling around all over the place, my money would be on the speedo gauge itself. These are a common item to fail as these cars get older. If your speed sensor fails, then you will get no signal what-so-ever.

Brent.
