TornadoAir... good or just the Devil's work

I saw the infomercial and thought that this couldn't be real. The manufacturer claims it adds HP, up to 20. I think it would just restrict air flow more. If you don't know what it is, it's a device that you put in your intake tub that creates a spiral effect with the air, supposedly adding air pressure. Here's the web site : tornadoair.com.

Does any one have this, and if you do does it help at all or does it just help burn a hole in your pocket.

one of the physics teachers at my school is the moderator of the performance car club and he brought one in one day and showed us how it worked and all. i told him that i learned that the tornado didn't work, and that you actually lose horsepower. he said that's true if your intake tubing is horizontal, but if its vertical, it can help.

just thought i'd add that.

How does gravity affect the way the tornado works??? And would it still work if you had an intake that was vertical in the beggining(the tornado would go here), then the tubbing would meet the throttle body horizontal???

Yea i could take it, hook up some ball bearings and probably have 20 psi running through my block

NO WAY

Basically this thing generates swirl in the incoming airflow. Theoretically this helps generate a slightly higher velocity and aids in flame propogation within the combustion chamber. If you have four valve heads, swirl is generated in this design, so no noticable increase is likely. In fact, I saw a test in a car mag (R&T, Car & Driver one or the other). They tested it on a GM Fullsize truck. I remember no HP increase and they actually saw a reduction in fuel economy. There are a couple of items like this on the market. SO far I have seen nothing to support it. Want an improvement? change your airfilter to K&N or the like!

actually....

I remember a series of posts on this subject a while bacck -- and the consensus was less than unianimous.

While it doesnt seem like it should work (something sitting in there restricting air flow) but he logic behind it is that swirling air travles better through the twisting intake tubes...

At least on the VG with the funky path that the air takes to get to the throttle body, i think any reduction in turbulence would be a good thing.

I actually saw some car show on TV, on TNN... forget what its called, but the dynoed a camaro before and after, and the tornado air did increase the horses.

Also the spiraling air supposedly results in better atomization of the fuel into the air, basically better mixing.

So I dont know, while for a piece of (probably) cheap metal, it is overpriced ($80 or so?), I dont think there is any doubt that it does improve HP and fuel economy if only a little bit

This thing aint't gonna do crap except restrict airflow into the TB and MAF. Swirly tech my azz. So what if it does that. Do you really think the air is still "swirling", when it goes though the TB, into the intake manifold, down each intake port and finally though the intake valve??? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

If you guys think this stupid thing has a chance in hell of working, I'm gonna break out the wife's cookie cutters and start selling them to you guys? What do you think gives more hp, smilie faces or little doggie shapes.

I think coupled w/ a JET "performance" chip, ooops, I mean sticker, it will add UP TO 100hp.

have u actaully tested the thing?? unlikely... I'm not doggin u, but u seemed to shoot down my post without sparing the sarcasm.

But like I said, I saw a tv show on TNN, maybe Horsepower TV... calld something like that. They tested the thing. It increased HP. I dont know what other conclusive evidence is needed other than an actual test.

Sure a lot of technical jargon can make it seem "cool" but I think the proof is in the pudding. And the thing increased HP. Period.

Wow, you saw "some" tv show and it was call "something like that" and you want me to go out and spend(ie.. waste) $$ to go test it?

Hey, if you like it so much and don't give any merit to my views, go get your car dyno tested, buy the thing and then get your car retested. If you can get a real measurable gain(not dyno noise), post back here and shut me up. It should only cost you a few hundred or so right?

Oh and SCC mag confronted the idiot owner of the company. He used the ONE dyno test out of what 10(??) that showed gains. Ohhhhhh....there's your "period". The particular dyno he used was Clayton(?) type that is very know for giving wrong results.

But hey, what do I know?

have you even took apart the intake manifold of a VG? the air takes 2387273287 turns before it even gets into the engine.. first off it goes up then into the dual chamber throttle body.. which RIght there, would stop the swirling air.. then it has to do like a 45 degree angle turn into the upper intake manifold, then it does a 90 degree turn into the rectangle chamber then back down into the lower intake manifold then it just sits there waiting for the valve to open..

bascially from the start.. that thing only swirls air for like 1 sec.

Probably little to none. It will improve throttle response though. Want horses? Remove that stupid little air inlet tube to the air box, enlarge the hole, fibergalss a 2.5-3 inch pvc elbow to it, run a pipe or dryer hose down behind the headlight and there you have a ghetto but effective CAI with the K&N in the box. Or if you have the funds, buy a pretty CAI kit from the aftermarket. If you can't get one, you make one. Check out grassroots motorsports, love that mag!

no need for anyone to get all hot and bothered... bu why is it so unbelievable that this thing could work?? Ok, yeah there are a lot of turns in the intake path, but thats the point of the spiral, it increases the velocity of the air by making it easier to navigate...

An analogy would be a water hose, put your thumb over it at the right angle to increase the velocity of the water coming out. Something roughly like that.

man, the arrogance on this board astounds me.

when i get dyno results that actually show that the product works then i will say that it works..

but so far.. Sports compact car, Super Street mag have both dyno tested the product on a Integra Gsr both mags have shown that the results were either negative or nothing..

then they sports compact car inquried the company asking why this thing didnt give any good results.. all the company did was send them a big thick book on why the product works..
