TCU self test not working....

Is there anything that could cause the test to not even initiate? My bushing is crud, on top of that I am thinking the speed sensor or TPS, if not both, are done because I have to rev up to 4-5K to shift into 2nd. My hub is blown due to me being a noob so I can't check if cruise control will engage. I thought I might try the self test while the car is immobile, but there is no light besides when it does turn on for the few seconds once the ign is in the "on" position.
Update:

TPS and speed sensor are okay. Next I will test the A/T selctor switch to make sure it works appropriately. According to Pohjola's DIY encyclopedia, the TCU needs the TPS, o/d light/switch, and the A/T selector switch in working order for the test to run. I hope I can run it so I don't bug anyone on here about the problem, but it is taking a bit of time. Any tips are welcome, even if "stop wasting my time!"
