Auto tranmission shifter

I have acquired a 93 with 152,xxx miles on it. It seems that I have to move the shifter passed reverse (pretty much to neutral) then to reverse for the reverse to engage. The same thing with Drive. I have to shift it passed drive (pretty much to 2nd) then put it in Drive for the Drive to engage. Would this be some kind of sensor or could it be in linkage? Thanks in advance for your help!!!

I am pretty sure, after reading about this on here, that it is the shifter bushing. I imagine if you search for that, you will find ample info on how to fix the problem. Enjoy your Max and a cheap fix!

Funny enough there's a 'sensor' called 'inhibitor switch' which is located in front of the tranny accessible from under the car. Linkage wire end is connected to it through some lever. It is slightly more complicated than just sensor for N & P as you might guess from the name and was responsible for intermittent misbehaviour of AT in my case. It can be opened, cleaned, greased with electrical grease and it should fix the problem if it is the reason for you trouble. It does sound like it is IMHO.

This page has a wealth of information about the inhibitor switch.

Wouldn't shifter feel loose if it was the case? He also has to move shifter quite far to engage, I think the distance is beyound warn bushing abilities.

i dont think it feels loose, ive always thought the first sign was having to move the shifter up or down weird to get it into gear

Mine is very simlar whereas it's tight in all gears, you can feel the clicks of some mechanism (whether under shift handle or in tranny), but the actual engagement of the R or D function isn't evident. I don't experience the Reverse issue as frequently as the Drive position not working, unless I flick it into D so the shift is quick and a more deliberate physical motion. Though, the inhibitor switch may have been misaligned in the abuse, and may need to be realigned........... I think it's the bushing, but I haven't fixed mine so.....
