This replacement was done on a '92 SE.

This was a pretty simple job, took less than an hour and would have been less than 30 but I messed with the existing lock for a while to see if I could keep from having to replace it.

Tools required - 8mm socket - 10mm socket
Tools recommended - Trim Tool - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

The first step is to remove the 4 - 8mm nets that are holding the plastic lens (Between the brake lights) on the trunk lid in place.




The second step is to remove the carpet/felt on the underside of the lid by removing the caps/clips. The trim tool makes quick work of this. Be very careful as this carpet/felt tears easy. As you get more pulled it becomes more important to be careful as the weight of the felt hanging will be enough to tear it.

The third step is to remove the final 4 - 8mm nuts holding the plastic lens in place that you have exposed by removing the felt. They are just to the side of the center (left and right). Once these are removed you can carefully lift the plastic lens off the lid.



This is how it should look now.......



Now you will need to remove the old tumbler. First you will need to free up the rod that is attached to the backside, there is a plastic clip holding it to the tumbler mechanism.



Pop the part of the clip that is around the rod off the rod and it will swivel around and you can lift the rod out.



Now you are free to remove the tumbler by taking off the 10mm bolts. Depending on how the tumbler is situated you may have to turn it a little by hand to allow the two pieces to come apart.

Reverse the steps and you are good to go.

How did you have it re-keyed? By a locksmith?

 

That is what I am going to do, when I soundproof the trunk in a couple of weeks I am going to take my master key in with the trunk tumbler to have it matched.

 

Great How-To! Is there something to add to the tumbler assembly to help it out, like graphite? Heard of that being used on residential locks, etc.

I believe that you can, I did not. I read several articles online on the topic and did not see that it was listed in any of them so I stayed away for now.

You are right, in many listings it mentioned using if for home or hotel locks but not autos.

For some reason my trunk lock has never worked with my car key. Bought the car with 87k miles with all 3 stock keys included, kind of interesting.. Didn't help when the bracket that holds the pull cable came loose preventing me from opening it in any way.. I had to take the rear seat out, climb in the trunk with a flashlight and pop it manually

 

hehe, I got the replacement lock on Ebay for about $15 if I remember correctly.
