MDF Rings for 6.5" speakers in front door

I bought two MDF rings on Ebay some time ago and started tearing down this week for my soundproofing project and was surprised to see that there was a much bigger hole than I was expecting.

Here is what I am facing.........

I have seen these that I believe that James used to make, if no one has better ideas I guess I will be heading to Lowes tonight or in the morning.

Would like ot hear what others have done and if someone happens to have a set laying around. If not, I will get cracking on making some.

Thanks in advance

Why spend money, especially almost $30 on the plastic adapters, when you can rig up the stock enclosures? I think the air movement needs to be contained in a controlled enclosure, not wasted in the vastness of the door................

That is strictly an opinion though, I was tickled to see if it would work, but if your speakers are too big, then it's silly to do this. Anything is better than the blown 3.5 inch speakers that were there, especially Bose.

I am going to think about it tonight as even if I buy off Ebay it won't ship until Monday anyway.

I am wondering if a PVC design like the Ebay units would be as good as the MDF units. It also looks like the ring has vents and am not sure if that would work agains all the RAAMMat and Ensolite I am about to put in the doors.

I think you should make them if you want an adapter like such, especially if you have access to some high quality dense particle board. I think the particle board would help contain the frequency to the speaker and not the door panel, especially if you made a gasket to help seal the mating surface. Though, with all of the metal components in the door, I don't know how effective all the isolation material you are putting in there would help. Unless you make all connections solid, like the plastic door panel, or made sure there are seals or some kind of a dampening material. I think it would be hard to escape all rattle or unwanted vibration.

Not trying to put words in your post, I am just guessing on your desired out come with the dampening material and questions over pvc/wood design. Nor do I know what kind of speaker you are gonna install, and I only have experience from my own car, so I am no expert by any means. Hope no one cares too much about my opinion to dislike me for it......

All my local Lowes sells is 4'x8' sheets of MDF so I will check the hardware store near my work tomorrow. Worse case I will just buy the ones on Ebay.

you may reconsider MDF.
I used plywood, since it's easier to get. (2x2 should be more than enough).

that, and if it gets a little wet, MDF is trash (close proximity to window)

I may do that, going to try one last place today and if not will give plywood a shot. Just not too excited about the PVC ones on Ebay.

wow I wish I would have known about that ebay info with those enclosures. I would have gotten them earlier. I can barley tell if my front speakers are on at all sometimes and I have 4X6s in the front doors, seems like the speaker on the driverside door has disconected. I was wondering how do you connect the speaker wire ends with good connections if the connections dont match the vehicle wiring connectors? I dont want to have to take the car to someone else like maybe Nortons Stereo or something if I can do the work myself.

theres nothing wrong with the pvc ones ! Just get some dynamat and put in on before you mount the speakers and the adapters to the door and that will take care of any vibration plus it will make it sound better anyways ! Wood will get nasty overtime from all the heating and cooling that goes on from the weather changing and stuff.

Got the plywood tonight, my daughter is going to draw the templates and I will cut them tomorrow.

twtraudio has a decent point, I think I will work around any issues there might be with that by wrapping my setup in RaamMat.

If I don't like it after they are made tomorrow I will order the ones on Ebay.

IMO I wouldn't really be leery of using MDF. One of my black VE's still has the ORIGINAL set of 6.5" adapters/mounts that I ever made.

Just last month I took those mounts out to change the speakers, and the mounts have held up just fine. Yes, they've taken on a little moisture and it was evident by the "rings" being a bit swollen, but they're still very solid, and they're nearly 10 years old now!

Maxinout - if you take apart your stock speaker enclosure, you can easily find the two wires that go to your speakers. Just cut those off and wire them right to your new speaker(s). However, if the speaker stopped playing, it's likely the amp went out rather than the speaker wires coming disconnected
