See if you can help me with this miss...

I developed a weird miss. Here is what happened. I was driving, floored it and it started missing. Has done it ever since. It doesn't feel like one cylinder missing more like more or all of them.

Here is what I noticed:

Sometimes does it, sometimes doesn't.

Doesn't seem to do it when the motor is cold.

Does it more in reverse

Comes and goes and then clears up.

When at night, everything dims with the miss. (alt slow down?)

If I park it then go back and drive it about an 30 min or an hour later, it misses more then it clears up mostly.

Like I said it does not feel like one cylinder.

I was going to do a fuel filter, seafoam, wires, cap and rotor.

The last 3 were done not too long ago

Thanks

I'd check your wires 1st. Sounds like one or more may be arcing. I've had issues at the spark plug end. Be careful when you remove them. Twist then pull. If there are any cracks or worn insulation, your spark plug won't get the current it needs. If wires, I'd only recommend a new quality set. I prefer OEM Nissan.

Lots of other potential root causes, but I'd check wires 1st. Good luck.

You might check out all your vacuum hoses. Just dealt with similar issues, but it could be a combo package too.

What's the trick? Open hood while it's running at night. Use a spray bottle and spray the plug wire area and see if you can see the arc inbetween the wires?

I have never heard of a vacuum line causing a random sudden hard miss.

I describe the symptoms of a leaking/disconnecting vacuum line as a "miss"; the appropriate way to describe that behavior may not be a "miss". Just today, I realized my vacuum port on my head, which provides vacuum for the heater conrol valve, was wide open and disturbing the idle quite profusely, but when I increased the rpms at the throttle body, the symptoms faded to a less severe "miss" like behavior. After plugging the hole, it went back to smooth idling and throttle response.

Change fuel filter, add fuel cleaner or fuel additive and run a few tanks of premium name brand gas.
Double check your fuel cap to make sure you have a pressure seal.

Water in the tank can be a PITA. Sometimes takes a few tanks of good gas to clean up. Good luck. I avoid no name gas stations as they tend to have more problems with gas quality.

I have a 1989 nissan maxima. It sat for 7 years, since ive had it i put on, new spark plugs, spark plug wires, K&N filter, Camshaft position sensor/Distributer, clutch, water pump, rear main seal, timing belt, tires, interior work, and exhaust. nothing major, just regular fix ups. When i got it after sitting, it appeared only the spark plug wires were chewed on by mice. Im having a very big problem with it tho. It starts fine, and the computer tells me code #55, meaning nothings wrong. When i drove it it missed and spit and had very little power, but sounded nice under 2000RPM. So i looked at it, I found out my injector was spraying in way to much fuel, i could smell it and that cylinder, plus 2 others were not firing. all 3 back cylinders run fine, but none of the front run at all. the far left front cylinder, i think #2, Was spraying way to much fuel, so i replaced the computer, later to find out it dident fix it, and plus my other 2 front cylinders, i think #s 4 and 6, werent getting enough fuel. i tested them, the far left front injector plug read like 13v, the other 2 read around 2.57v. all 3 back ones read between 11 and 12v. but the front 3 stay the same they dont change ever, to open and close. im getting spark, air, and fuel, i checked, throttle position sensor, grounds, emission control sensor, plugs, compression, intake, and they all turned out good. Ive seen on forums people have this same probllem, ive been trying to figure this out for a few months now, could you please help me or just tell me what i could do or need to do to fix this? Thank you very much, Robert Zeromski.

I have counted three threads which Rob hs shamelessly hijacked. Try being more subtle bud, no one likes having their bubble penetrated.

Considering the many issues possible with the fuel system, I will agree with 93SC on this one, but it never hurts to find those disastrous leaks........

I can't help you Rob, if you have seen this problem arise in discussion on forums, try targeting that specific thread and perhaps the forum altogether. I bet we will see a thread pop up with the exact same post shown above as soon as you get 15 posts, huh?
