Muffler

hey guyz, i just won a new muffler off ebay . my stock muffler has 2 holes in it and i thought a preformance muffler would be much cheeper then a replacment muffler (thats what some dude at a speed shop told me) anyway... i won a ractive muffler with two very cool angled tips i got it for 79.00 .. is ractive a good brand?..., i know its not top of the line like borla or something but i just needed some thing that would look/sound better then a holy stock muffler

peace

Dual DTM? pics or a link to the auction? Ractive is good brand but you almost always get what you pay for. And if your muffler has holes in it Im guessing you could probably use some new piping from the cat back as well. so I would save until you had enough to do the whole thing at once, I think I paid like $95 when I put my OPAK on my GXE, but that was with my account. Normal price is like $100-$120 for 2 1/4" piping from the cat back and installing the new muffler(in my area anyway) Now I have a cat-back system on my SE

Re: Muffler

Shouldn't these be questions you should ask before you bid on something? What would you have done if we all said to stay away from that brand? Next time do your homework before you bid.

BTW, it wouldn't cost all that much to get a Borla. Mine was only $120.

Muff

Sorta off topic, but I am also looking to replace the stock mufler. I have a stock dual on my 91SE. The thing is, while I'm certainly looking for some HP increase, I really don't want to hear it. At least not any louder than stock. I'm pretty sure my manifold stud(s) are gone as well, so I don't want to add any more noise than I'm already dealing with.
Any muffler suggestions you can suggest that meet my criteria?

Greatly appreciated!

just dont open the pipe too much and get a muffler that doesnt have a huge tip. its not gonna make the exhaust leak worse or louder.

thank god my se studs arent broken yet.

Sorry about my initial judgement. maybe it isn't. I have a friend with a similar looking exhaust and it sounds loud but then again, different brands may make a difference. You also have a stock pipe, so you never know.

just a quick question, i'm noticing some quiet ticking when my car has been sitting out in the cold all day. could that be because my studs are about to bite the dust? i was thinking about getting a new muffler some time ago, i think i may have to in the near future!

If you mean the car has been driven and is sitting there cooling off in the cold, and it ticks then that's normal contraction of metal parts - don't sweat it, lots of cars (most?) do this.

Stud breakage noise is usually at cold startup when the gaps between the manifold and cylinder head is greatest. The noise then goes away as the parts expand, but you should still fix it for various reasons.

You should really think about fixing those studs if you plan on keeping the car. leaks that close to the head can cause valve damage. I fixed my studs. It was tough, but cheaper than paying someone else. The stud repair kit (issued by nissan) is like 80 bucks. The about 6 hours of labor...If you want power without noise, a catback with one of those flowmaster 70 series will prbably be ok. It is the quietest muffler FM makes, but still flows well. You could also keep the stock muffler, go y-pipe and catback. Keep the cat though, if it is removed even a stck system will make some noise. My friend had a n eclipse with no cat on a stock system. It actually sounded really nice.

Yep, I was planning on doing the studs at the same time as the muffler. I don't know much about Flowmaster. I'm not in a position to do the studs myself though.
As for the muffler, I don't know much about the Flowmaster. Can you link me to somewhere I can look at them.

Classic ticking noise for first few minutes of running car. Tends to quiet down after metal heat fills the gaps. But should be addressed as it can warp manifold(s).

I went to the Flowmaster site and they don't appear to have a muffler for a Max. Their application guide only shows 300ZX and the 240SX. Maybe I missed something?

flow master mufflers are universal, and i do not recommend them for maximas... they are loud as f**k

70 series may be ok. but flow master isnt the brand you want to go for the max

I suggest the.....

Dynomax Race Magnum series muffler! no substitute, V8 sound and stock appearance and surprisingly quiet during cruising! since we are on the topic of mufflers what do you guys think about this one....I'm uprgrading my exhaust this week, probabaly gonna take off the good ole Dynomax and put this one on with the new y-pipe-->

pretty strightforward stock look, dual 3.5" tips and SS, should be about $70-80!

Looks perfect to me. How come you are suggesting the Dynomax to me, but changing to the JC?
BTW:On the JC, is that the cost for the muff including tips?

well I need a new look and the Dynomax SS muffler with dual tips costs an arm and a leg so I had to go with a different brand! but I've had my Dynomax for one year and it sounds awesome and I really like it, but like I said I want a new look! the one on the JC Whitney page is $125 tips included! but I'm sure I can find it on another site for much less(proably $70-80) but if you go with a Dynomax, I got mine from jegs.com for about $60, heres a link-->

I am able to get a 2k SE muffler. If im looking for a deep sound thats not much louder than stock and good performance, should I consider something other than the 2k muffler?
