Ok, so a fellow org member stopped by today and showed me something on the 91 GXE I'm parting out. In the trunk behind the seat is some cylinder shaped heavy piece of metal. Either end has bushings like would be found on a suspension. What is the point to this? What's it even called? He wasn't completely sure but was under the impression that it was only on the GXE and was to do with weight balance but was more or less useless.

Vibration damper would be my guess, I've took mine out since it was in the way of my sub. Heavy as hell too.

funny thing though is mine doesnt have it, i think American models had it only or maybe the European ones did as well

 

Could be, Both the maximas I had were imported from the states.

 

only the US-spec GXEs have them from what I've seen from various international members....

 

I see, so now that it's removed, and I highly doubt anyone wants to buy it, what other uses would work for it? Maybe it'll work like a dolly with my hammer and dolly set, or as a weighted roller for applying fabric to the interior. Maybe I can make a kick *** wheelie bar out of it? Any legitimate or smart *** suggestions welcome.

my 91 SE never had one, but my 89 SE parts car I had, did.

is your SE auto? I am starting to think only vg autos had them.

 

In general would taking the cylinder wieght thing out affect anything? Ive got a GXE auto, and I just got some speakers, so I dont think I would need the excess wieght from that.

But read the warning on the other thread linked above. the bolts that hold it down are just t-nut things that sit flush under the car. make sure they don't fall out as you're removing it, otherwise you have holes in your floor. (which I did and never had a problem.. but some people don't like that.....)

 

When I took mine out one of the bolts fell...It's no big deal, a dab of silicone will seal that hole right up!

 

Yes!!! That vibration dampner is there for something! Maybe to keep the parallell link from harmonizing like a pitch fork????????

if its purely for weighing the rear down, im surprised Canadian models didnt have it for winter conditions.

 

Maybe it's a ballast weight is to counter the even heavier nosed A/T versions....Where as the 5 spd manuals were lighter on the nose and didn't effect the rotational turn-in balance....that's my guess.....

 

I think they put it in there simply to mess wit the techs who joked about blinker fluid. Imagine explaining that to a customer at the dealership, "well sir we just need to add about 20 lbs of excess weight to the back of your car to make it ride smoother, we've ordered the part and after labor that will be $400, will that be cash or CC?"

 

I really believe it's there to help balance the A/T cars during maneuvering, and braking since the A/T is so much heavier than the M/T......

 

I think to a point you are right, I'm sure it really is there for dampening in the rear to allow the weight over the rear wheels so the car weight pushes down more than the spring pushes up to create a smoother ride. As for why it weighs what it does, who knows, may be for auto vs std, but in the end once you start modifying that's a quick goodbye. I just enjoy being a smart*** so I'm enjoying this thread.

None of the NZ models have it, and they are all auto. Ours did have bigger springs in the rear suspension, so I guess that would go part way in counteracting not having the weight in the back.

 

Hmm, you can use that as a door stopper to keep doors open lol

 

My Aus spec Auto VG Ti has it but the front turns in and the rear well, keeps going...

 

On the real though, has anyone removed this weight dampener and had negative results. I ask because I have 89' GXE A/T and have replacing front end steering/suspension plus adding lowering springs all around, strut tower braces and sub frame connectors, so I want to know if I should leave this in or remove. I'll leave it if really needed but don't need extra weight back there, I think all my tools should suffice as a weight equalizer. Appreciate any real info. on this subject even though I enjoyed all the humorous comments, thanks, Shiloh.
