heres my shot at it-->

speed sensor location---->

open the hood, stand on the driver side of your car, look down at the tranny, you should see two cables with grey "snap-on" harnesses midway on the cables, (if I remember correctly) the harness on the right is the speed sensor, follow it down to the tranny and the speed sensor should be right there....thats as good as I can decribe it!

They don't have a cable. The Maxima utilises an electical signal from the sensor as described by DA-MAX.

Related Question…

I have a 5sp 89SE, and I've noticed that my spedometer will occasionally drop to zero when driving on the freeway or on the street. Do I have to have a new speed sensor installed, or is there some other problem that I have to worry about. I just recently had my tranny rebuilt, but this problem was happening before I had that work done. Any suggestions would be appreciated (I think I asked this question once before, but don't recall getting a definitive answer as to what to do.)

It is most likely your speedo unit. If when your speedo drops to zero, but your odometer still ticks over, you can rule out your sensor. Seems to be quite common.

Hmm, still sounds like the speedo unit.In my case it was sometimes just the speedo and sometimes the odo and speedo. How frequently does it occur? If it occurs really often, like at least once a day, you could purchase a new sensor, install it and if the problem goes away then you have a solution. If it still occurs with the new sensor then you can rule out the sensor and take it out, clean it up and return it for a refund (check with your parts store about refunds). I did this first to confirm that it wasn't the sensor. Got a second hand speedo unit and I have had no problems (touch wood) for the last 6 months.

The way these cars works is that the signal is processed by a micro at the speedo unit which then drives the odo, speedo and I assume a signal for the ECU. So it is hard to track down faults. Sometimes it is a fault solder joint, bad micro, bad speed sensor and so on.

Good luck!

Re: Re: MadMaxBrent…

Thanks MadMaxBrent!

I'll look into this solution and let you know how it goes. The problem occurs about 2-3x/week, so it's not an everyday thing, but it is pretty annoying - plus it makes me weary as to how many miles my car REALLY has on it. Thanks again, bro!
