caliper rebuilding

so im wondering what it takes to rebuild a caliper on a 3rd gen.
does it consist of just cleaning and changing the dust boot and caliper piston seal?

and also anybody know of a good quality rebuilding kit or can just any suffice?

i kinda need to rebuild my drivers side caliper.. its a leaking a lil DOT 3 and thats no good. i think its the seal.

Rebuild is a simple seal and boot replacement after you have stripped the caliper .................... problem is you don't know if its going to be worth your time till you stripped it and see how much rust has occurred on the piston's surface

If the boot and/or seal needs replacement you can be sure to find either dust/dirt or rust on the piston surface that damaged the seal.

I am in South Africa and generally are unable/unwilling to buy kits on-line because of cost ............ some of our local US brothers will maybe chip in later with a suggested source I guess

parts stores sell rebuild kits, but dealer kits aren't that expensive either. they even come with instructions (just like in the FSM).

I was unable to find source for pistons so before buying the kit which includes only seals check your pistons first and don't bother if their surface is already rusted. If you try to clean/polish that you might create a leak as a result as you'd decrease diameter of the piston. I'd rather buy rebuilt calipers instead if the pistons are rusted.

while i was on 'vacation' i rebiult the caliper.
its really simple and the caliper piston looked really good. still smooth and shiny..
replace the seal and the dustboot in like 10 or 15 minutes.
when it was time to put the piston back in the bore it was kind of a PITA but u just have to play with it until it slides in.

Lube the seal with brake fluid before putting it in. may burn a little bit at first, but the feeling goes away pretty quick. just be sure to wash afterwards.

oh yeah i lubbed everything up..
it was really tight so even with the lube you had to have it perfectly straight down and in.

are we still talking about a caliper....
