Digital speedometer not working?

Digital speedometer not working?
Ok. I did a search for this subject and found out I am having different problems then the other guys. It all started about a week ago. I was driving to class, when I notice a weird chemical smell. I thought it was the salt they threw on the icy highway. I look to see how fast I'm going and my speedometer and tachometer were very dim. I thought my battery was going dead. I get to class and I take out my alternator/battery tester. The battery and alternator were fine. When I was leaving from class, I noticed my speedometer and tachometer wasn't on. But my digital fuel and engine temp. and my HUD were still on. Then about a minute later my speedometer and tachometer come back on. It was ok for a couple of days. But two days ago, as I am driving around I notice the same chemical smell. So I look down at my speedometer and I see it quickly dimmimg. I checked my battery and alternator again and they were fine. I turn the car back on and my speedometer and tachometer were gone again. But this time they didn't come back on. It has been two days since they went off. My HUD and my digital fuel/engine temp. are still on, but no speedometer and tachometer. I am hoping I don't have to pay the big $$ just to get it fixed. Anybody have any ideas of what it could be?? Maybe a fuse are something?? I do not know much about cars, so any help will be appreciated. thanx. Richard

Re: Digital speedometer not working?
someone emailed me about something like taht, but it got returned to me so here was my response (to basic digital dash failure, your chemical problem may be something unrelated)
I haven't personally had any experience with those units, I but know someone
who had a 87 300ZX with digital dash that had similar problems where the
display would come on and off. Apparantly Nissan used some pretty crappy
soldering techniques becuase a few things in the maximas can be fixed by
simply resoldering them - clock and door lock timer. The guy with teh Z said
after he resoldered the circuit board inside it, it worked fine again. If
you've done some soldering before, it's not a hard job. If not, maybe you
can find a friend who knows how and just ask them to resolder all the joints
on the board. When you do this, add some flux to help the solder reform on
the joints. If you happen to be near Atlanta area, I'll do it for you. If
you dont know anyone to do it, you could probably take it to an electronics
place and have them do it pretty cheap ($50 maybe). Good luck
