Wow, Fobart. Haven't seen that name in years and years! I can't believe that page still exists.

"On the 1992-94 SE's, the side mirrors stick out a bit further from the body, and are painted the color of the body of the car."

The SE mirror is always black. Maybe he should've mentioned that on 92 SE and up the mirrors are heated as well.

Several errors, everything that has already been said, and also the new mirrors were introduced in 91, not 92. And the electric trunk release existed prior to 92 as part of the digital package. Might even be on normal GXE's as well.

Bonus question: What's the only year that can be positively identified by the exterior and how so? There's a catch though, grille, tail lights and rear reflector are void.

No, even if SS models were discernible via exterior (which they are to an extent), it was available in both 89 and 90.

It has to do with exterior appearance, it's not mechanical and is apparent on NEARLY every Maxima from that year.

Agreed I first read that page back in 1999-2000.

Weird that nissan did add some improvements for 1991 including the machine finish wheels.

It's not the paint job, it is?

Is it the one with the offcenter Nissan emblem on the grille? '90 maybe? Although that might have been '89 and '90

*edit* nvm re-read the post/question

That combined with the gray trim around the bottom, or something? Older models the gray on the sides comes up higher

Could it be a paint job as pointed out by Augustus? Not sure if any years had specific paint colors. I'm trying to think of other features that might be unique other than the ones that are not applicable, but it's hard lol. The 4DSC sticker came on every year, right?

I don't think it's a specific paint color because Hectic said it's "apparent on NEARLY every Maxima of that year". If anything, that implies there's a certain paint color or something that "hides" the giveaway, hence my guess at the lower trim paint - as all the cars except black ones would have the lower trim paint. But now that I think about it, the lower trim paint was probably an '89-'91 vs. '92-'94 thing.

Although, I think in '89 or '90 you could get a straight silver color but I don't think that was a one-year-only-type of thing.

I'm intrigued by this. I normally don't pay any attention at all to non VE's, and generally have a no-VE-no-care attitude to any 3rd gen I come across, so this will be good to know

Maybe the wheel stud covers? I know they weren't all the same size, as I picked up some SE wheel stud covers once that were much too big for my VE's.

I thought it was an exterior feature. I used to have the Star Trek wheel, but ditched it for a 92-94 black steering wheel. Burgundy + ugly steering wheel design = fugly interior to stare at.

We have a winnar

High rocker paint combined with polished alloys and neo side mirrors = 1991. 89-90 have the high paint as well, but with painted wheels and Zenki mirrors. 92-94 also have the polished wheels and neo mirrors but with low rocker panel paint.

Basically, if you had 1 of each production year randomly arranged, without the grilles, tails or reflectors installed. Provided it's a two tone color and not black or gray, the 91 would be the only year that can be positively identified, due to the high rocker panel paint Even though it shares the wheels and mirrors with the 92-94's. 89/90 and 92-94 would be a crapshoot.
