Used Or New

It's apparent that after a certain time the VE coilpacks starts to arc, causing all kinds of driveability problems. From severe bucking, stalling, inability to idle and lost of throttle response all because one coil was no good. Which brings me to question why replace old with old. Is it purely a cost factor.

You already know, if you can go new then go new, sometimes you find a good used 1 and never get the new 1 cause she's running good w/used 1. If you got the dough then just cop the new joint.

Just snatched one up from the Zone...I'll be done with the firewall side next week, then on to the next . It's an Hanshin part...probably the same thing the dealer sells for considerably more.

They are $56 at Auto Zone. And they are OEM even though they come in a duralast box. They have the Nissan logo on them.

I have a tranny and rear main seal to put in next year, looking at EMPI axles to go with it. I also have a spare master and slave from the donor car. What clutch and PP you plan on using.

My only word of advice is to mark them if you just buy 1 or replace 1 with a diffferent one.

I had a bad one and the accidentally mixed it in with the rest, so I have a bunch I am not sure if they are good or not. When I took the extra set from my parts car, I have them in their own box in my garage marked "from parts car."

I had two bad ones the rest are good, but I'm replacing them anyway. Call it a fresh start.

can a ignition coil on these ve30 be bad even if it passes the ohms test per fsm?

I have two that says so. The coil is basically a high ratio step up transformer and what you're testing is just the primary coil. How can a ohm test show if the secondary coil is arcing across itself or into the the transformer core or if the rectifier started conducting reverse voltage. Under such conditions back E.M.F. is fed into the primary coil which is fed back into the power transistor. And if I'm correct the VE power transistor is monolithic mean it's multiple transistors formed on the same substrate much like an IC so interaction occurs. Mine was so bad even though it ohmed out good that sometimes I heard it arcing out just before the engine died while flying down the highway.
