VE vs VG

This has probably been asked before, but search didn't turn up anything really usefull. I'm looking into getting another 3rd gen (5spd) if my friend doesn't sell me his 5th gen. VE 5spds are VERY hard to find in good condition. On the other hand, VG 5spds are almost everywhere down here in TX. I've noticed that the VG's sell for much cheaper than the VE's. I know the VE's have 30 more hp than the VG's, but the VE's also had the VTC problem. The one bonus for the VG is that it can handle 300zx parts.

Now, would it be better to go buy a 81-91 SE and put a turbo in it, or should I buy a 92-94 SE?

How much power does the turbo add? How much would it cost to put on?

VG Just so see the look on the face of VE owners when you whip them in a race!

But...

Does the turbo add that much hp? If I can, I'll make up the 30hp with mods.

well let's see.. how fast is the fastest modded VG 5 spd you've seen?

look at that.. and consider my VE has under $500 in engine mods and I ran a 15 flat my first trip down the track. easily into 14s if I figure out how to launch.
Which would you choose?

Re: But...

But then I can turbo my VE. Maybe, if it were possible, I mean if it was done before, I mean if someone could actually do such a thing, I mean really now.

*game show music*IT'S VRIABLE TIME!!!!!!!!

here we go...this is how VG beats VE:
-your blind grandmother is driving the VE
-your right leg is shorter than your left
-you have no arms and driving with your nose gives you a massive migraine
-the fuel lines are cut and spaghetti is used instead
-no tires
-the infamous "VE to Pinto" engine swap(Jeff's big secret swap from a while back)
-bicycle tranny swap....21 gears with thumb shifter
-pistons are made out of Jello cups and spoons for con rods
-substituted apple juice for fuel
-600 lbs fat man used a rear spoiler

I'm pretty sure then the VG would win, but then again these variables must be met!

I see your point. I've been leaning toward getting a VE 5spd for a while, but I've never heard any arguments as to why the VG would be a better choice. I'd just kinda like to see the pros and cons of both sides.

Hmmm, you have a point, but you could by the vg ( cause it's cheaper) and then scrap the engine all together.....

Thousand dollars (give or take) for a 30 horsepower difference?
they're all biased.....just look at their names......

bottom line both engine have their pluses and minuses , the big deal with the vg is that it's easier to add forced induction, you can do it on VE but it appears to be a whole lot more work

personally I like the VG, its a strong car, not too many major maintenence issues and VEEEEEEERY reliable! plus its been the Nissan workhorse engine since the 80's, plus with a little inginuity( sp?) you can make it pretty quick with some major mods....and the 5spds have a much better chance of making into the 15's easily with regular mods(I've seen it done) rather than us auto VGs who have to struggle a lot more and tinker here and there! go with the VG!

I heard that VGs have a bit more low-end grunt than the VE, so you might like that if you just do a lot of aggressive city driving.

I had a 89GXE auto before my current 93SE 5spd
the VG did have a little more lowend pull but once you get past 10mph, the VE will more than make up for that especially in 5spd form
on the highway, the VE is a different car; cruising in 5th gear at 70mph and still has great throttle response all the way up to 140
my VG was pretty slow to accelerate above 70 or so
if I had a VG 5spd, I'm sure it would have made a little difference, but not enough to change my mind

I personally would choose the VE 5spd if you have some patience and wait to find a nice one.

yup... when I totalled my 93GXE back on April 2nd, I didn't find a 5 spd VE until mid July.. I looked everywhere between Houston and St Louis trying to find one.
Finally found this one in Enid, OK. 165k miles, but the engine's still running strong!

well lets see jim, you only named your name here after one of those 2 cars...

and also, the only experience i have is with a 93 auto gxe vg engine, but i would have to say, from what everyone has been saying, that it depends on what kind of driving you plan on doing, and what kind of mods you want to put on it.

Deal with whatever you have now, VE or VG and save up for a VQ. It's as simple as that.

I'll take my VQ biggie size (3.5L). My bosses 02 pathfinder is a beast (compared to our 97 5.0 explorer), it sounds cool too but needs a CAI. Too bad its a rental and I can't get good video footage of the revlimiter haha.

You get a gold star for the day.

VE 5-speed all the way. If I had it to do all over again, I still would have held out for my VE.

Ya...

If my friend doesn't come through with the max he promissed me, I'll end up settling for a VE. It's got some minor problems, but overall it's a better choice. 5spd will be hard to find, but I've seen them before...i'll see them again. If my friend does in fact come through, I'll be drivin a 2k1 AE GLE for a small $5k. Hehe. I'm keepin my fingers crossed that deal doesn't go south.

I think the VQ is probably the lightest V6 by Nissan.
