rebuilding an alternator

well i know my alt is on the way out and i was looking for a HO unit for my audio system but they stopped making them everywhere so i thought i would buy a new one. my local Nissan dealer told me $300 and they had to install it or they wouldn't give me a warranty. the local autoparts store want $250 something. and napa wants over $300 as well. so i had the thought of rebuilding it myself but I have no idea what i would need or if it would even be worth it to try. Any help on what i should do?

www.autozone.com 95 amp alternator with limited lifetime warranty for $169.99 +tax when you take them your old one as a core. Your best deal and for extra juice put a spare battery in the trunk or upgrade to an optima battery and use a battery cap for your system.

Hey there fellow Clackamas member. I suggest you stop over at A.B.E in Clackamas as they do custom alternator work, including customs to get higher output. Their address is as follows...

Auto Battery & Electric
13273 S.E. Hwy 212 Clackamas, OR 97015

I need to contribute to this all Oregon thread.

tell me what kind of deal you get. My alternator isn't that great and I have a spare one in my garage (not for sale btw) I might consider having rebuilt stronger.

well i wish it was good news from ABE they told my $500-$800 for a custom 200amp alt (screw that!) the only option i have is to buy a reman or new alt and throw a smaller pulley on it to bring more amps in at a lower engine speed.

once iraggi alternators gets up and running again they make 150-200-220 amp alts for our cars but IDK when they will be back to 100% yet

two posts above you.

Sounds like an arm and a leg for a high output one.

It would be a lot cheaper to get a normal alt, then add an extra battery in the trunk and a capacitor for a stereo system.

I am not that into the stereo, but my alt is weak enough that my amp pushing one 12" sub dims the lights.

it looks like he still has it and he dropped the price too

yea upgrading my system from 2 10's at 400 watts to a single 15" level three DC audio sub and close to 1000 watts just for it so its going to be a lot of amps going through the system. Hectic thanks for the heads up sir! and Cliff yea its a lot for custom stuff and $500-$800 is way to much for a normal guy so I am waiting on a good paycheck to grab another battery to put in.
