Hey guys, I'm having some problems sometimes with the auto shifter on my 92 SE. Once in a while when I'm in park the car wont start, I have to put the car into neutral and then back into park and it starts right up. The other problem with the shifter involves a cold start going from park to any gear, only once in a while. I start the car up, try to go from park into reverse, and it feels like I'm going to break the whole shifter assembly. It stretches the whole shifter mechanism and pops into reverse. After it does this, the car goes from P through all the gears just fine.

Has anyone had these symptoms before? If so, what did you do to fix the problem? Thanks!

 

check your shifter bushing, when mine was bad it sometimes wouldnt start in park and you would have to go to neutral to start it. easy cheap fix

 

Do you know what part number it is? Also, can I change it from inside of the car ?

nice, I'll have to pick up one of those at the dealer this weekend. That should take care of the not starting issue, but what about the other issue I'm having with the shifter? Going from park to reverse... I feel like the shifter is going to rip right off sometimes. Like I said its not all the time though, just once in a while.

 

the bushing may fix that as well, but otherwise does it happen moreoften when youre parked on a hill or anything?

also if youre not, always rip the ebrake before you go into park, saves a TON of pressure off of your parking pawl, that may help too

and remove the center console and see if anything is caught in the shifter assembly, doubt that would be causing it but who knows, alot of stuff accumulates in 20 year old cars

 

It usually only happens on level ground. I think that the bushing is probably causing this problem as well. This morning the shifter was being difficult going from park to reverse so I pushed up while in park and it went into reverse no problem. Looks like I'll be busting out the floor jack/jack stands on Saturday. The car needs a bath real bad too.
