Tranny Problems - PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

My tranny's making a bad sound. It's a rapid knocking sound that increases as the RPMs increase. It sounds like I have a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle, but not as snappy-sounding. It only happens while in gear (manual trans in my '91 SE).

I just got off the phone with my mechanic, and after draining the tranny fluid, he basically said "use it until it dies, then get a junkyard tranny." That worries me. I'm DRIVING to New Mexico from Pennsylvania in 2 weeks.

Anybody recognize these symptoms? Any imput would be GREATLY appreciated.

thanks guys

Have you checked your CV boots and brakes? Does the car surge? Does the engine race and then ome back down before the car accelerates? Does the car take more than 1/2 second to get into gear?

Did the new fluid help any? My was making these noises, but then it went away when I got the gear oil filled.
