Sun roof

Hey my sun roof randomly stopped working the other day. It's up right now so I need to get it closed because I live in Washington.

What fuse does the motor run off of?

Also, isn't there a way I can close it manually?

Thanks,
Nick

Turn your ignition off. Remove the spotlight unit (the one near the rearview mirror). Remove the rubber cap you see. Using a screw driver, push the center of the shaft and turn it clockwise to close the sun roof.

Hope this helps.

Ok thank you! I haven't tried it yet due to lack of time, will this close it if it's up in the propped position? It's not 'open' just 'propped'

yeah it'll work either way. Just turn and watch it move.

I have a 1992 maxima se, but there's nothing under the map light assembly besides sheet metal for the roof... Am I missing something? There's no rubber boot or anything..

Thanks

pull the map lamp assembly down by grabbing the right side of it

directly behind that is the motor for the sunroof, on the bottom of it should be a black piece of plastic the size of a nickel or so, pry this off and underneath it is where you can stick a flat blade screwdriver to manually open and close the sunroof

As I can see from the picture, that's the one we're talking about (just without its cap). It's the round thingy with a white plastic button at the center, just push the screwdriver in and turn.

Ok, so. The 'map light assembly' is the two lights up front by the rear view mirror right? (just to the right of the sunroof switch) I take that out so it's dangling by it's wiring harness and there is nothing there. Just sheet metal...

I thought the motor for the sunroof was behind the sunroof on top of the back seats. If I peak under my sagging headliner from the back seat I can see the motor.. But if I take my dome lamp assembly out I still don't see anything.

I must be missing something... I'll try to take some pics and post them here also.

I'm just wondering, how do you operate the sunroof before? I have a 93 SE and I'm not sure if the sunroof console will be different from yours. The motor should be near the switch.

It has to be a none true Se because all SE's came with the motor right there where the maplight is at. Question for you with the sunroof problem. Is your motor a dual over head cam engine or single over head cam. here infact ill post a pic of what a DOHC motor looks like just so we can clarify if its SE and there for been altered from the factory sunroof motor.

This is a 1992-1994 nissan maxima SE engine if you truely have a SE.

Wheres the power button that opens sunroof(factory button is on map light fixture). If you follow the button wiring you should find the motor for your sunroof. From this picture it looks like somebody just moved the motor somehow, in the picture it looks like a factory headliner with the sunroof sliding cover but it's hard to see real good in pic.

I have an SE. I have been working on cars for awhile, and if you look at my profile albums you can see my mods/engine.

My headliner sags in the rear, and if I peak back there I can see what appears to be the motor just above the passenger's seats.

My switch is located just to the left of the map light assembly. Everything about the sunroof appears to be stock. If it was an after market it was done very well. Maybe it was installed at the dealer?

As far as I know my Max has all the options, leather ect.

when you say to the left of the assembly do you mean its a seperate piece?

the stock sunroof controls are INBETWEEN the two map lights in the maplight assembly...if yours are indeed to the left of this whole assembly then I dont know...does look like a stock headliner in the pictures especially the map light assembly cutout

maybe someone stole your sunroof motor and thats why it stopped working in the first place

Hmmm looks like mine is either after market or has been changed around. But the map light assembly has no switch in it, mine is just to the left up in the headliner

thats where the controls for my 92 gxe were
im pretty sure it was some aftermarket roof,it always worked fine though
it took me a while to realize what the button on my controls labeled
A S C was for (its automatic sunroof control)if selected it
would close automatically when i turned the key off and
possibly auto open but i dont remember for sure

Mine just randomly stopped in the propped position. I guess the best thing to do is grab a multimeter and see where I am and am not getting power. I'm guessing there should be a fuse/relay that the sun roof is one. If it is after market though I'm not going to be able to know for sure. Blaah!

Sunroof

ASC is a aftermarket sunroof installed by dealership i too am having issues with mine. After cutting open headliner (already had some issues so figured it gave me an excuse to redo it) i checked ground and all connections (sunroof motor located in the rear of sunroof) after all that it worked. So i spend all day redoing headliner only to have sunroof stop working again after 2 days i have spent a couple of weeks now trying to track down a wiring diag as it was not factory having a hard time doing so. Not sure what to try i didnt see any kind of relay when i had it all open or i would have replaced it. any help?

Yeah I'm not ready to cut my head liner just yet... I want to test power to the switch first, but I haven't had time. If there was a relay for the sunroof it wouldn't be located WITH the motor. It would probably be by your fuses, under the hood, or under the dash somewhere. And it will be on some circuit with a fuse also, might be something to check.

If it is an aftermarket one then it is hard to know where they drew the power from. If everything else is still working then they may have an inline fuse somewhere in the power line. Your just going to have to start tracking wires til you find it.

By the way your G/F has great nails
