Can the VG go over 5500 rpm?

My tach started the dashed red line at 5500rpm, but doesnt actually read line till 6000rpm. so does that mean its "ok" to hit 6? my friends gxe hit six in full throttle before shifting, so i am just wondering

HeHe, It is easy to say that. Since you live so far. It makes me wonder, if you lived in the same town as a VE owner. And he said lets race, would you even show? Come on no flames here. But just look at the facts and specs. That would be like some with a 2k 5 speed challenging someone with a 2k2 6 speed.

I left the car in 1st gear (automagic) and took it to about 100rpm before the rev limiter kicked in. For some reason the 2nd gen maxima's and Z31's have a higher rev limiter than 3rd gens . Its not like it helps or anything, its just nice to put the tach way in the red .

If you ever wanna come with it (doubtful) than I can get you disount hotel rates (corp. disc.) and we can run down the strip I frequent every season at the Indianapolis Raceway Park. I would love to host you in this beautiful city. It can be a lot of fun if you know the right people. And when I'm done showing you the town, I'll show you the track and we'll make a few runs. No flaming, I just don't think your car is faster than mine, that's all. Either of you. Seriously, though, I am very up to your challenge and if you ever make it to Indy just hit me up either of you and we'll have a good time, pound a few beers (if that's your thing) and then I'll roast ya...

Yeah, that would be great! Brickyard isn't until the beginning of August, but that would be cool. It's usually on or around my birthday...

Yeah, I'm pretty confident in my VG. I have to be, with the insane amount of time and money I've invested in the piece of crap!!! I love it.
Seriously, though. If you or fly find yourself in Indy or know you're gonna be in town hit me up and we'll have a good time for sure! This spring I'm gonna have a meet open to any Nissan owner. It's prob gonna be a pay to play kinda thing, but for a few bucks we're gonna have a catored dinner and run down the strip all day. I also plan on having a dyno if it can be worked out and enough people confirm thier attendence...
BTW: My hospitality is open to ANY member of the org that may find themselves in Indy...

My wife has a great $500 camera but it isn't digital. My scanner is also broke. I borrowed a digital camera just the other day from a friend but it is the kind that takes those little memory card things and I can't figure out how to get the pics from the camera to the computer!! This camera is an older one and I am more familiar with the new ones. Basicallly, it takes a piece of hardware and software that she didn't give me so I need to figure something out. I need to do it quick, though, not just ot update my page but a lot of people want to buy my rims and need to see pics and a lot of other people on the org want to see my car when I get the new seats in. I don't know how I'm gonna get pics...

IF you have actual pictures you can take them anywhere to get em put on disk, like a kinkos or someplace, actually i think even Walmart's photcenter can put the pics on a disk for you and it's not expensive either!

My VG isn't slow at all. I don't have timeslips to back it up since I've done so much to the car since last season at the track, but when IRP opens I will be running the first week and I'll be sure to post my timeslips to prove that statement wrong.
BTW: GXE slushbox? You gotta come with somethin better than that...
end of story.

Auto VG's aren't really slow, they are just not as fast as VE's. I have a '91 GXE and my car is pretty fast for low-end (driving around town) but of course high-end isn't as good as it should be. Though, it still pulls like a bastard over those Honda econoboxes!

Could anyone tell me how fast a certain car would be? About 3 weeks ago I raced a '90 Accord 2dr that had a '94 accord engine, full exhaust, intake, headers, and was manual. We stayed neck to neck but I eventually beat him. It was a near even match though and I have an auto plus my injectors are screwed up, I need a new o2 sensor, TB sensor, and a ton of other little things (plus I need to clean the TB). He got real mad when I told him my car was stock, screwed up and an auto! Just goes to prove that a high revving engine can't beat real power and torque. That's not to say I have 300hp and 2,000,000lbs of torque or anything but 162hp and 192lbs of torque is a lot better than most Honda's. They have to rev to 7k just to generate that 100gp (gerbil-power)! I still vigorously believe that Nissan should have given all our Maximas at least 3.2L 240-260hp DOHC engines to really live up the 4DSC thing to the fullest. I'm not hating on Hondas or anything but dammit I hate 'em and dammit I like Maxima's of the 3rd gen persuasion!

BTW, I hit 5900-6000rpm the other day when I went into "rage" driving mode. I didn't even realize it until I looked at the tach and I slowly let off. I've felt really bad since then because I don't want to destroy my baby!

The real question is does a mildly modded VG(I/E/) make any power over 5500? Not really. My bro has a 90 5-sp w/ custom Y and cone filter. Runs out of breath at about 5000 rpm or so. So why beat the hell out of the valvetrain by reving it so high?

Jeff92se, your right. I've had my VG up to around 5500-5700 once or twice. I never usually push it that hard because I don't want to kill my tranny. Though, it did pull pretty hard up to around 5000-5200rpm, where about the max HP is but after that it really didn't seem to pull any harder. From now on I try to keep it under 4500rpm but occasionally still get up to about 5200 when showing the Hondas how its done! I'll hit the rev limiter and they'll keeping reving to about 25,000rpm just to generate their max HP! j/k I really despise Hondas (despite them making some great cars) so that's why you'll always hear me making fun of them.

In first gear, my car has little pull past 5500, but in 2nd and 3rd it still has a lot of power past then. I don't understand where you guys are comin from. I know VEs come with like 30 more HP (rated by nissan which isn't fact anyway, anyone chassis dyno compared the two??) but it is not a crap engine and there are advantages it has over the failed attempt at VVT by Nissan (VE DOHC). I am happy with my VG and don't wish I had a VE, even though they are very very nice and come stock with more power. Anyone wanna race??

Maybe yours does but I'd say 90% of the VG guys would agree that their VGs don't like to pull past 5000-5500 rpms. My VTC have been working fine for the last 65000 miles or so.(no friggen' thanks to the crap Nissan mechanic!) BTW. With my mods, my VE pulls right into the rev limiter(about 6700-7000 rpms) VGs have definate low end grunt(more than the VEs but the VE can pull well past where the VG rev limiter cuts off)

Nothing wrong with either engine. If the VG got some cams like Nismo87 did, watch out!

BTW I talked with an expert this evening and he agreed with you, Jeff. He said any pull I was feeling seat of the pants was in my head or a by product of inertia because the powerband of the VG drops out just before 5500 so there is no way on a midly modded or stock VG that there could be much power in this range. He did say however that with lighter cam the powerband could be pushed to the redline. Does this sound accurate? He is a total Nissan expert in every way and has never given me false info. Can anyone challenge that or should I take his word for it? It would be nice to have a little extra...

I have a video of my VG incar 0-65 if anyone wants to see it, let me know and i'll email it to you. (I dont know how to host an mpeg file) My VG does lose some power over 5500, but its not terribly slow. You can feel slightly less pull, but I think the sound of the VG is more pleasing than the power. All i have is a jwt HAI and the video came out pretty good. PM or email me if you want to see it.

Same reason hondas shift at 7k RPM's. They aren't making as much horsepower up there, but they are making sure that when they shift the RPMS will be right in the power band for the next gear. If the hondas didn't shift so high, they wouldn't be in the VTEC range for the next gear and they would suffer slower times at the track. For best track times, shift at redline until someone proves to you that more power can be had by shifting earlier. For daily driving, you don't really need to shift at redline.

i believe that the stillen ecu raises the rev limiter to 7K and eliminates the rev limiter in 3rd and 4th for vg autos. Probably no purpose unless you were running an agressive cam and some boost.
