I know this my VG without the ISKY cams didn't have a problem pulling to the rev limiter in 1st and 2nd gear. It just took a while to get there. With the right intake the car should pull to 6000rpm without a doubt. On the dyno my VG lost around 17-20hp from 5000rpm (power peak) to 6000rpm. Stock or modded VQ's lose around 14-20hp from the same rpm. The only difference is that they hold the power peak for about 400rpm longer. This in effect gives them 500rpm more powerband. Now a VG with cams and ported heads has the same power curve shape as the VQ's do. For the ECU its benefit is much more than just a higher rev limiter (which doesn't really do any good). Throttle response, lowend-highend torque is improved. Other than a Y pipe no other mod has the same average gains over baseline.

VG auto dyno with intake, Y pipe, and advanced timing, 93 octane gas.

VE 5 speed dyno with CAI, UDP, advanced timing, 93 octane gas.

both were taken in shops with about 55 deg air on a warm engine.

Of course there's a big difference between auto and 5 spd dynos, but my auto VG had more mods and was still making 30hp less.
the more important thing to look at is torque. my VE put down over 160lb of torque from 2k rpm all the way to redline.

the VG only made that much torque below 4000rpm, and dropped like a rock after that.

Jeff92se is right. Today I just pegged my tach out at 6000 rpm passing 2 cars (30mph in a 65mph zone?! friggin rednecks!)well, after about 5k-5200rpm, I started to wonder "Where did the power go"? It certainly didn't pull after 5200 so I should have just eased up on the gas.

BTW, I was just curious what you guys thought. After 12yrs ('91 GXE), how many HP less than factory specs do you think is common for most cars? I seriously think I have about 15-20hp (at least a good 10hp) less because of suspected problems like clogged cat, bad injectors, bad TB sensor, clogged TB, muffler malfunctioning, etc.

I dunno.. my GXE put 135hp on the ground a while back, and if you count a 20% power loss that gives you ~169hp at the crank.. I had an intake and Y pipe on it (which is about 10 hp gain), so mine still made just about factory specs..

that was with 120k miles.

Oh, its a 20% loss from crank to wheel HP? I always thought it was 10-15%. Matt93se, what Y pipe did you use? I am almost positive I'll go with the WSP since its so cheap, but good quality. You only got about a 10hp gain w/ intake though? That sure doesn't sound like a lot. I always thought the y should do 10hp on its own and intake another 3-7hp.

HAHAHA! Well, I know something you guys don't! I have a friend that can get me a VG engine with 5,000 miles on it, MINT condition for $1500. That's why I'm not fixing my current engine because that will solve a whole lot of my problems.
