Maxima Vs Porsche 944

I'm not sure why, but it costs me more per month to insure my 1994 Maxima than it does to insure my 1983 Porsche 944!

$13.00 vs $17.00 a month (liability coverage only)

Maybe it is based on age of vehicle

I will say that the Maxima will leave the Porsche 944 for dead in a drag race. Stretch that out over a few miles though, the 944 wins.

As it does whenever there is a corner....

I sure like them both!

He has liability only, so neither car's replaceability is a factor.
Perhaps they the numbers show a "classic" will be driven a bit more carefully.

Porsche would be cheaper to insure on Haggerty if it isn't already.

Haggerty only insures classic, weekend cars.

It might not be cheaper though, I think Haggerty provides FULL coverage. It's cheaper than a lot of insurance companies with full coverage. I noticed that OP only has liability.

Personally I like the 85.5 on up 944's with their different interior design, and I like how the twin came has the same front nose as the Turbo. I had thought about buying one once, until I found out what all is involved in doing a (proper) timing belt and water pump change... And a replacement torque tube...

Age is more likely the reason why the 944 is cheaper! I think that model only had 150 hp.......the early 944 Turbo only had 217 hp, and the first 944 turbo S was 250 hp iirc.....I loved that 944 turbo and that big exhaust system...It was deep and throaty!

I prefer the earlier interiors, the 85.5+ were too "Asian" for me.

Earlier versions reminded me of the old British sports cars (as does the electrical system).

Yeah, working on it takes patience.

The first time I did the belts (and seals and...) and updated the waterpump, put it all back together and all was well - until night came.

I pulled in the garage, turned the car off and the headlights would not go down, WTF!

Found a radiator hose was not in the exact position it needed to be, and was caught on the headlight linkage -

Clutch replacement, I think it took me 6 months to finally get it all completed in my garage, what a PIA that was!

Not for the timid, that is for sure!

I've got it listed for sale here, for fun, I've threatened a lot over the past decade to sell it, no one ever comes up with the money.

I know I've got well over $20K wrapped up in it over the years

Maxima, good car, other than those fricking exhaust studs!

I know a guy with a 944 Turbo. He is very patient and has owned a lot of European cars. He tells me about the lengthy garage times he puts in with them. The car is pretty sweet, but not my bag.

The insurance rate seems really low, but I would highly recommend full coverage if you can afford it, or at least get comprehensive insurance. That cheap liability coverage seems great until something happens, like a deer jumps out in front of you or a piece of wood falls off the back of a truck.

I pay about $110 a month and have full coverage with a $100 deductible on my BMW and 94 GMC 4x4. Since the Maxima is parked until I put in a new clutch, it only has comprehensive ($500 deductible).

Several years ago I hit a deer driving my Infiniti QX4. The damage didn't seem terrible, but it broke the headlight, bent the hood, front bumper and driver door. Total cost was over $7k and the replacement headlight for those is $1500 for a new one.

2 doors generally cost more to insure than 4 doors. It's based on a profile of the typical owner and how often each gets into accidents. Especially if you have liability only then it is not about replacement cost, but mainly likeliness of an accident that is going to cost the insurance company money.

thanks for the tidbit of information but the OP is stating that the 2 door costs LESS than the 4 door.

try reading the thread before clicking reply.
thanks!

It can take a while for your rates to come down. Good thing for me, I have a relatively good driving record. Also, when I turned 25 about 10 years ago, I got a big drop in my insurance.
