AC compressor always 'engaged'

Hi

I recently replaced my AC idler pulley after 12+ months of no AC. Everything worked well and right on cue the AC pumps cold air when I push the button.

However, the AC will not disengage when I release the button or turn the air-vent controls to 'off'. The compressor still spins and I can feel the pipes pumping cold air.

The FSM has a lot of guides for other things like how to fix it when it is stuck OFF but not ON. Any help is appreciated.

Are the radiator fans still running when you turn off the AC? Is it still turning after turning off the car and restarting?

If so, first thing to check is unplug the electrical wire on the compressor and start the car. If the compressor stops running, then you have a short on that wire. If it's still running, then the compressor clutch is stuck.

Electrical fans on the rad are not running and removing the wire does not effect the symptoms I have described.

Then the clutch is stuck. What you can try is tap around the face of the compressor with a rubber hammer to see if that will release it. If not, then you may need to take out the clutch and pulley from the compressor and check it. The FSM shows how to take it out and check it.

Incorrect. It would mean the relay is stuck, possibly due to a faulty switch at the control unit or the ECU itself is constantly providing ground and energizing the relay. Whatever the case, it would just mean that the relay is always closed. A short would do nothing but blow the fuse.

Oops. You're right on that. Relay would have been the first thing to look at if that was the case. Too bad it's not the case for the OP.
