Transmission removal ?
You can absolutely remove the transmission without removing the passenger axle. Remember, the passenger axle just sits in the transmission, it doesn't have a snap ring or anything like the driver side. The passenger axle bolting to the carrier bearing bracket is what keeps it still and makes a snap ring unnecessary. So, when you unbolt the transmission and pull it off, there is nothing keeping the passenger axle attached to it. I've done it no problem
BUT - the problem is that it's a PITA to get the transmission back ON with the passenger axle still in place. Think of all the wiggling/shifting/jiggling you have to do to get the input shaft lined up with the splines on the clutch. Plus keeping those stupid transmission plates lined up. Then add to that frustration also trying to line all that up along with the axle splines. By this time you're kicking yourself because that shortcut you think you found turns into you just having to remove the passenger axle anyway.
But I have actually one one occasion managed to get the tranny back on without having ever removed the passenger axle. But it was incredibly frustrating.

I don't know about the auto tranny, with the 5sp physically smaller, the passenger side can for sure stay untouch. When i did my clutch, i didn't even unbolt the passenger side wheel, and it wasn't any more difficult at all.

just finished installing the clutch. I did remove both axles and I'm glad I did because it would of been a ***** to install the tranny back with just the driver side axle out. thanks for the suggestion on removing the tranny. The car runs perfect and now on to my next mod............

Cause you're **** strong ****.....You probably installed it with one hand holding one getting the bolts started!!!! That's how I do the Hardbody but to make it even easier install 2 guide studs at the top of the engine block and set your tranny on them then get the other bolts started and it's easy as hell.....be sure when you make these studs using longer bolts in which you cut the heads off, that you slot them so you can remove them if they bind up a little with a stubby screwdriver!
