Handbrake Adjustment?

I own a '94 maxima.. anyone happen to know where I can tighten the emergency brake?

I'm learning how to do power slides and 180's.. and the handbrake doesnt lock the wheels until its almost a full 90 degrees up.

Thanks!

I think there is a bolt in there that can be tightened. Read something about this before. The whole center console has to come out to get at it. I need to tighten mine also.

I did that.. took the whole center console off. All that was under there was the handle for the brake, and the 2 chest seatbelts. I look all around for it.

Can you get any information? I've been looking all over.

Thanks

I wanna do this my self, I just looked in the FSM. There is an adjusting nut that is located on the left side of the base of the parking brake. the diagram only shows one nut in the location. I would assume to tighten the nut.

The book says with 44 foot pounds of force the lever should move 8 to 10 notches.

Thanks a ton.. I found it this time. It was close to impossible to turn the little nut, because for some reason there are small metal plates sticking out on both sides of it. I was forces to tighten it with a set of needle nose plyers, from the top of the nut. What a pain!

Anyway, I got it nice and tight, brakes lock up real good. Thank you!

have similar problem

my e-brake when pulled will not stop the car...i mean when you pull on it its like having to press the brake softly...dangerous isnt it..?
also when i hit my brakes there is too much travel distance ( have to press harder to stop). Ijust had the car tuned up and pads changed by a family friend who works in a garage, and i think that he put some cheap pads on. Everytime I stop softly I hear some squeking, like the way cabs do... I want to tighting my e-brake... is there a webpage out there that has the diagrams or instructions. My fathers 89 max has great brake travel just some light pressure stops the car.. and the e-brakes work really good.. looks up his rear wheels.
God forbid if I was in an emergency and I didnt have good e-brakes how would i be able to stop?

The emergency is to stop the car from moving, rather than stop a moving car. It is more technically the "parking brake" or "hand brake" than the emergency brake. It is normal that you barely slow down when you pull it. And you wouldnt want your wheels to lock anyway, you woulnd't slow down as fast.

Anyway, to tighten it you have to unscrew the center console... (two screws in the back, 2 in the front, and 2 below the emergency brake, you have to pry up a little plastic cover). Life up the console a bit, it won't come off because it is attached to seatbelts, and at the base of the emergence brake handle, you should see a screw sticking up, with a nut on the bottom.

Pull the emergency brake up a few clicks, and then tighten the nut, and you are all set.

To Crazy4Maxima

The rear drums brakes on GXEs are notorious for going out of adjustment. When your friend worked on the brakes, were the rear brakes adjusted? This will make a difference in how your brakes feel.

Make sure this is done correctly.

Yes.. He changes the pads and on the front and back.. b;/c he stated that the pads were uneven worn.. So I am guessing thta in the process he messed up with the brakes... rear doesnt break as much as the front... The brakes are too soft period... and the e- brake i would litterly have to pull all the way just to get it to slow alittle. Big difference on my fathers 89 Maxamima GXE, brakes are great... and his e-brake slows the car with about 3-4 clicks...all the way up it locks them up... Whats up with my brakes... Does it have to be bleed , is there air in there. basically, if i really need to stop i would have to hit the brakes and hard to stop....that is my problem

Take your car in for a brake inspection. Places like Meineke (and most places) will do a free brake inspection...

I was having a problem adjusting the rear disc brakes individually. Is there a place along the line that this is done? My driver's rear tire rotates quit easily when spun even with the e-brake pulled. I thought adjusting the hand peice would help, but it only made the rear brakes engage sooner (fewer notches). The passenger side grabs good though. Any thoughts? Bad cylinder? I looked for the load sensing valve assembly and could not find it on my '89 SE or is that only for the ABS systems?
