depends on the tools you have in your garage.
at minimum, you'll need some BIG (2" sockets), heavy rubber mallet, and a vice.

the correct way would be to use a hydraulic press, but not many of us have them in our garages.

did you get a cost on the bearings yet? Mine are shot and I need to replace one set too..

the 36mm socket just removes the bolt off the end of the axle.. the problem is pressing the bearings out of the wheel hub. not an easy task.. that's where the other sockets come into play, as you've got to find one that's just a weeee bit smaller than the bearing, then use it to press/beat out the old bearing and push the new one into place.

jsut checked courtesy's website, bearings are $35 each. you'll need one for each axle.

I'll be doing it this weekend whether I like it or not. I've been hearing some weird noises on that side of the car and I've checked eveyrthing else on that corner.. even replaced the CV joint and complete brake system.. only thing it could be is a bad wheel bearing or internal tranny problem.

so I'm going the $35 route before I go the $900 route. fun stuff.
I gotta pull the struts off anyway, so this'll just add another 45 minutes to it.

can't explain it... just makes weird nasty noises.. like the front end is about to fall off. thunks, scrapes, clicks, everything.. just weird stuff.

can also sometimes move the wheel on the hub when they're really bad. jack the car up and grab top and bottom of the wheel and try to rock it back and forth. if it moves, it's either ball joints or wheel bearings.

update.. courtesy says you're supposed to use a 1-ton hydraulic press to do the job.
I'll try it in my vice and if it's not big enough for the job, I'll hop in dad's old ford and drive to a mechanic shop and have them press it in for me.

cost for 1 bearing, including new seals and snap rings was about $65, shipped.

interesting.. i have a 89 maxima. its pretty old.. runs awesome.. im just wondering if i should be waiting to replace the bearings on my car any time soon.. it has 176k miles on it.... just wondering if they are already messed up or anything.

but i dont think they are messed up since it drives pretty quite, besides my exhaust being loud.
