OEM oil filter, blue or grey for VE engine? Does it matter? Story inside..

I'm from Ontario Canada. I went to two Nissan dealers and both of them said they have never heard of grey filter for 94 maxima. The first dealer i went to said that and went to check on their catalog. He then apologize saying he is sorry and said he could order it for me. The second dealer actually display i knew nothing and was saying i was making it up. I told the guy i have it on my car and he is more than welcome to take a look. He refused to do so and insisted of saying he didn't want to argu with me. I did't feel like arguing with him so i left. So my question is, it seems if the dealer doesn't even aware of this rare and pricy grey filter for VE, can i use the blue filter for GXE? It's cost half the price of the grey.

Thanks.

The Vg's use the blue filter PN 15205-55Y00 your VE uses
the grey 15208-60U00 as far as the difference between the 2
I don't know what they are but Nissan calls for the 60U00
on the Ve's so I would probably use it myself.

The grey filters are used for the VE because they allow the VTC's to get oil quicker when the car starts. This prevents the dreaded VTC failure, so I would use the grey ones. BTW, they are $5 each at Courtesy. Buy 5 to make shipping costs be reasonable.

Isn't it the quality of the anti-drainback valve that's important in lubing the engine up at startup? AFAIK, this valve prevents oil from draining back down into the engine backwards from the outlet side of things, giving you (theoretically) rapid lubrication at startup.

Nissan filters are good, but there are other good brands of filters out there too. Check out the Purolator Pure One filter - that one looks good (literally too!).

I haven't had any luck finding that Pure one filter in ontario. I know the blue and grey cost the same in US(from Courtesy). Don't know why the grey filter costs twice as much in Canada. It just if the dealer hasn't heard of grey filter; hey both guys from the two dealers said he has never heard of a grey filter for 94 maxima for 15-20 years he has been working at Nissan. I was like, what da!

Anyway, i'll try to buy them in US. I've also found a thread from Jeff92se about using Toyota filter(90915-YZZA2) as a option. I think i'm going to check out the price.

Thanks.

Woah, WOAH! I think it's overkill to buy filters from the US and import them! Nissan OEM filters are good, but not some magical, special filter made by them and THE best out there. Some other manufacturer (Purolator, Wix, I don't know) makes it FOR Nissan "to their specs" as the parts counter guys like to say. This is BS though, and the filters typically have only minor differences from the ones you can get off the shelf.

I would just get whatever the local Nissan dealership recommends or get a Wix or Purolator (regular) filter if you can't get the Pure One. I don't know where in Ontario you are, but I found at least 3 parts shops here in Vancouver that has the Pure One or can get them. Mine cost just over $10 +tax.

Check this out for more info: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/
And check out the Purolator website too for more info on the Pure One. I think it's the best choice out there next to the Amsoil filter (which I'd have to mail in).

I just got a recent oil change at my local Nissan Dealer. I checked to see if they put the Grey Filter and not the blue one. What I saw was a White Nissan Filter. Does anybody know what this is? I have never seen a White one. It's the same size at the grey one I have always been use to. Thanks for any info.

I meant both of the guys from the different dealer has been working for Nissan for over 15 years and they've never heard of grey filter. Anyway, $10 + tax for a pure one filter is pretty expensive, consider the grey filter is about $12 + tax. I'm going to phone Toyota tomorrow. No, i don't think there is a white filter for our max.

Thanks.

Well they both don't know squat. Look at the box for the Vg(blue) and see if you find your VE engined car there. Then look at the grey boxed one and see which cars they list. Hint. What Nissans can with varible timing cams?

I had to "school" more than one Nissan parts guy on this. He gave me a discount because he felt bad. lol

So Jeff, have you ever seen the White oil filter? The dealership did an oil change and gave me a White Nissan Filter. I'm wondering if this one also fits my car. If not, I am going to give them a call. Thanks.

Hi Jeff92se, nice to see you here. So you think Toyota filter is just as good as the grey filter from Nissan? I don't have VTC problem...yet, i want to do everything i can to prevent it from happening. Thanks.

I suppose any GOOD filter is probably fine. I used the Toyota filter for some time. I don't know if it was any better than the other quality ones(ie.. Nissan grey, Purolator, Amsoil etc..)

The Nissan "grey" one is almost white. Maybe the you just mistaken the grey for white. If you can, look at the filter and see what p/n it lists

I know what the grey filter looks like. This one is white and says Genuine Nissan Parts. It's not an Off-White, Pearl White, or light grey. It's White-White. I got underneath my car to get the number and all I can see is "15208". Those are the first 5 digits of the number. The rest is blocked by the oil pan. Does this tell you anything? What filter is this?

Hmm don't know. Hell I've been using Toyota filters all this time!

Do you have the box for it? It should list what engines it's for.

Hmm, okay. No, I don't have the box for it. The dealer did the job and gave me back my car keys and said, "Here ya go, that'll be $20." I guess my best bet is to call the dealership and ask them about the white filter. Thanks anyway.
