New 3rd gen owner
Well been on here for awhile now always waned a maxima looked at 5.5 gens 4th gens 3rd gens back in the day when I was looking for new car finally settled on a 01 audi a4 1.8t quattro 5 speed. Still had a love for maximas. Well turn out my cousin bought a 92 maxima se 5 speed as a temp car while he did work on his truck and as a gas saver. He got his truck back and the max sat for a month. I asked what he would want for it , and picked it up for 200. Was well worth it drives great suspension feel good no creaks or noises, clutch strong and does not slip. Everything works a/c, sunroof alarm cruise zero exhaust leaks, brakes grab and zero shutter. Yeh it does have rust and dings and such and sometimes between cold and fully warmed up I hear the VTC clatter and the shifter is heavy and a little cumbersome but its ok. At idle there is a little vibration and slight tach movement it is running on all 6 but planning on changing the plugs to see if it helps. Has some miles 192k but was taken care of. It will be a great little daily driver since I live in the city and keep getting dents and scratches on the Audi. It is really fun to drive I missed driving a v6 manual transmission.

This car has pretty bad cosmetic rust, thankfully all the suspension mounting points seem solid. I was thinking of hitting it with wire wheel to remove all the loose rust and painting it with grey por 15. will not look great but it might stop it from rusting more. I plan on daily driving this car for awhile.

i don't have any right now but when I get off work I will take some. Basically the rocker panels below the door, the wheel wells right in front of the rear tires and the spoiler mounting brackets are pretty bad. Would like to prevent it from spreading to the floorboards, or start leaking water into interior.

Hmm this was cause of slighty ruff idle. I blocked it off but any idea where this vacuum line is supposed to go too?
Rust. Like I said she will never be a show car but would like to at least prevent the rust from spreading. Thinking of wire wheeling off all the loose rust and painting over the rust with POR-15

i mean it's possible to get a raw image link from dropbox to work but it's frigging difficult. you have to highlight the image PLUS a little bit extra, right click, "view selection source" then find the raw image link in the HTML code.... then use the IMG tags around THAT. Too much work.
conver the URL from the top to the bottom type:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/p3gr7p2w1fhvupb/2013-05-03%2013.19.35.jpg

Thank you. Yeh thats a pain, kinda like what I have to do to get the raw image out of quickmeme. Yeh I will just imgur them next time for sure. Was trying to skip a step since my phone uploads everything to dropbox I take automatically

btw do you see a green connector/solenoid down below the unplugged port? is there also an unplugged port on the green solenoid? And do you see a cylindrical vacuum tank anywhere on the driverside strut tower area? Just under the MAF connector...
less obstructed view of tank

Yes I found both of those. There was one port empty on the solenoid so i plugged the line with the one way valve into it. the one without the one way valve I plugged into the surge tank. What does this power valve control? so kind of variable intake or emissions?

the power valve is variable intake. Basically there is a horizontal partition/shelf thing along the width of the manifold that separates the high-up runners (1-3-5) from the low-down runners (2-4-6) and a set of butterfly valves to either allow or disallow airflow to pass between the banks. When you are at/above Y% throttle position and under Xrpm, it will turn "on" and close the valve to separate the banks and elongate the runners and boost torque output. At any other time (above Xrpm regardless of throttle position, and below Xrpm and less than Y% throttle) the valve will open and use short runners to be less constrictive. FSM does not specify what the value of "X" and "Y" are, but I'd imagine around 3000-3500rpm and around 50% throttle.
As far as effectiveness, the VG engine makes 182lb/ft@2800 in the Maxima with VI, and the same engine makes just 173lb/ft@4300 in a Z31 (and probably only ~165lb/ft at the Maxima's peak-torque RPM of 2800 which is almost 10% difference). I would expect the VE to have similar if not better torque gains with the VI, but it wouldn't be reflected in the peak torque numbers because peak torque on a VE is always above Xrpm so the VI is already inactive. But if you had a dyno chart from a low-RPM pull with and without the valve plugged in, I'm sure you'd see a nice gap in the lines from 1500rpm thru Xrpm, then the same from Xrpm onwards.
The VTC's are another thing as well... if you floor it from idle you'll have 3 different stages of power
Idle to Xrpm = VI on, VTC off.
Xrpm to 4600rpm = VI off, VTC off.
4600rpm to redline = VI off, VTC on.

Ahh ok I switched the lines so now the one way valve is on the vac port. So basically it was stuck in high rpm mode? Glad that's fixed since 95 percent of my driving is below 3000 rpm. Its nice being able to smartly accelerate at 1/4 petal while rowing through gears. Hate how I have to wind the audi out or get into the petal to build boost to do the same thing. Been driving a 4 cylinder too long. The extra low end torque will help

Thats on my list. I am going to pickup a can of pb blaster and hit all the bolts that I might be removing. Plan on fuel filter, changing the plugs and cleaning the maf. Should help the gas mileage and run better.

VTC on the other hand, is RPM-activated only, regardless of throttle position, so you would notice that no matter how you drive.

Wow, I scour the country for years looking for a ve5, end up flying to New York to bring one home, and start working my way through numerous mechanical issues... All that just to own one, and this guy gets one dropped in his lap for $200... I guess the sun just doesn't shine on everyone's *** hole!
Good luck with the car man I hope you enjoy it! Third gens are very well built cars I've owned several and never cease to be impressed, especially now with this ve5, it's the quickest one yet...
