ok,so.....input shaft bearing/seal...

bout to replace it soon... my trans leaks lots of gear oil from where the bell housing meet the engine,my clutch gets hot and slips easily even though its new(im just guessing because its getting gear oil all over it..) and my first gear pops if i take off to hard.. so i've come to the conclusion that this is the part i need to replace...or at least im in the right ballpark. a question i have,is it the seal, or the bearing thats gone bad,or does it just have either one? other questions. can the trans be pulled or dropped while leaving the engine in the car? is it easy to put it back together wrong and destroy everything? and last, what parts need to be replaced when doing this repair?

any help is greatly appreciated guys!

Bearing is probably shot, causing the leak. Do you hear noise when in gear or in neutral with the clutch engaged? If so it's blown, if not it might just be the seal, but you might as well replace the front bearing while you're at it.

That's the ISB, the input shaft bearing, and it is in the deepest part of the transmission.
.
It's not too bad getting to it, just get used to smelling gear oil, and having it everywhere. Also, get a copy of the FSM from niccoclub.com, use the search tool to find that link. It's for the 94, but it has both the SOHC and DOHC info for all the models. That manual will tell you everything, but you must hav poatience with it!

You will have to remove the gear set and use press (hard way) or use the right puller to get it off/on

There is no just removing the bellhousing, that would be more a pain in the rear than anything else.

The procedure is long and requires great patience and an FSM especially. The haynes won't cut it.

You will definitely need an engine lift to support the trans on the way down/up, a good set of punches for the 6 or 7 slip pins holding the forks in place, and possibly a bearing puller/3 jaw puller to get the bearing off the input shaft.

Seriously, read some of the othetr threads about this topic and you will learn all you need to know. Get a copy of the FSM, if you ask nice enough someone may dig up the pdf file buried on a hard drive.

Keep an optimistic outlook on it, take your time, and don't assume anything.
