Unplug mass air intake sensor-car then idles smoothly

1991 Maxima GXE

My car idles rough and often the engine dies. I unplugged the mass air sensor to the air intake, and discovered that the engine then runs smooth, although, not accelerating in a normal fashion. Does my disconnecting the sensor mean that the sensor is not working? Please help.

If it runs good with out it the sensor is sending a bad signal when you unplug it the computer defaults the readings

I'm going to disconnect negative side to battery...thanks for your comments.

Yesterday, I bought a can of CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner, removed the the mass air flow sensor, and cleaned it as per the instructions that came with it.

Later, I started the car, then plugged the harness back into the sensor, and again, it began missing. Then I unplugged the harness, and the car then idled great

I read somewhere that I need to disconnect the battery, so that the computer can reset itself. Then I will start the car with the harness connected to see what happens.

The computer detects if the readings of the sensor are within specs. No matter how long you keep the battery unplugged it will not fix your sensor if it is bad. Like stated above, change the MAF and reset the codes.

P.S. My current Maxima sat for about 1 year without a battery and when I finally put one in it, the car ran the same way and had the same issues that it had 1 year earlier.

after i install the new MAF sensor, how do i reset the codes. One other thing, have the nuts been epoxied to the bolts that attach the MAF to the air filter. They are on so tight, that I cannot use a phillips, and using a wrench, I'm afraid that I will break the bolts.

The bad thing is with these old cars you cant get live data so you cant do a volumetric efficiency test on it
