Ground Control

If you guys want coil overs so bad, why don't you contact Ground control (www.Ground-Control.com) and ask them to custom make a set for you? The price will be around $800-900 including two front struts and they use Eibach springs. This is actually a good price. Ground Control is respected name.

I have a friend who has a 1991 Nissan Stanza, he got his Coil Overs from Ground Control, he paid $550.

Being that Maxima.Org has alot of members, I'm sure you guys could get a group discount.

My mechanic at local speed shop fitted AGXs from a BMW on my max. I don't recall what model, but he said they would fit right in and when I came back to get my car I had em! I will ask him what model Bimmer if I remember...

I'm guessing that you guys aren't familiar with Nissan Stanzas. The Stanza is pretty much the same a maxima. The body is the same, except it's smaller, and has more lines, if you looked at the two..you would think it's a big and little brother. The Stanza has the ka24e, same as the 240sx...so it has some power also (FWD).

Anyway, the suspension set up in the Stanza is pretty much the same as the Maxima. I mean they use different sizes of springs and stuff, but the set up is essentially the same, so without a single doubt, ground control would be able to make front and rear coil overs for a maxima.

Go to their website and give em a call..they'll know best.

Independant Rear Suspension. So you're sure about the Stanzas having a similar suspension design? Either verified by seeing them in person or in a shop manual...

I wish I knew more about the Maxima's chassis pedigree... kinda like how Chrysler used their K-car front clip for years and years on everything from midsize sedans to their minivans!

Coilovers would be kinda sweet (if expensive) though... then I could lower it juuuuust that tiny bit to balance the looks once I get rims.

IRS eh? hehe..

Yes, Stanzas have independant rear suspension, you can verify this by going to cars.com and researching the 1990-1992 Stanza. I can take pictures of the stanzas rear strut set-up..i have two assemblies in my basement right now..also have the front struts.

I'm 99.99999% sure ground control will be able to make coil overs for maximas, they custom make them for ANY car. They're adjustable.

One of you should give them a call. If you want the coil overs without the two front struts then it'll be around $400. You can run your stock struts..but i think they'll die rather quick.

Wasn't there a thread about coil-overs for the 3rd gen before? I thought Matt said the suspension geometry of a 3rd gen made coil-overs impossible/non-productive.

Well..he never said it's impossible to custom make coil overs for the max, he just said it'll be hard and expensive and would require camber plates for the front and rear.

I can take pictures of my friends ground control set-up on his stanza..you'll see if basically the same as a maxima, top mounting points at the same. Ground control also supplies you with all the things you would need like camber/caster plates.

Believe me..if it could be done for a Stanza, it'll be done for a maxima. I'll get some pics of the stanzas rear suspension.

Well, camber plates shouldn't be too much of a problem. Nevin made some for his Max, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure, with a little coaxing, he could possibly bump heads with one of you more engineering-inclined folks to get something hooked up. Heck, I'll call Ground Control and see myself if they'll make some kind of set-up for the Maximas and get back to ya....

I called GC when the 4th gen coil overs first came out and asked about them making custom 3rd gen coils. They said they probably couldn't do it due to the amount of area behind the wheel. Which is puzzling to me cuz all the coil overs I've seen in person(Tein, A'pexi, etc) have been smaller diameter wise then what they replace. Good thinking on the Stanza part though..

BTW, this could be a problem solver for tires/wheels rubbing in the rear. Hmm.. 18x8.5? w0rd.

Call and talk to a guy named Tony there at ground control. He is the one that took care of the Stanza coil overs, and there were two sets of Stanza coil overs made that I know of, and I know both people who have them.

I don't know why they would say they can't make it, you probably just have to speak to someone who's not lazy to look into it.

I know for a fact the rear set up on the max and the stanza are essentially the same, except the maxima is bigger.

Coil overs aren't even hard to make using your current struts. You need an adjustable sleeve with the diameter just right t go on the outside of the strut, then you a platform that will go on this sleeve, which you can turn to adjust the height, and you just have to weld something onto your current strut to give the spring platform something to rest on..the top is easy..if i had the money i would make my own using my friends GC's as my diagram. The only thing about welding onto a sealed strut is the potential to blow up in your face.

ok..i just found out that ground control makes coil overs for the stanza now. The first two sets they made for my friends were custom jobs, now that they have the blue-print..it's no longer a custom job, the coil over set for the stanza is $399.

You guys who want coil overs can DEFINITELY work something out with GC.

Interesting.... maybe if you get a bunch of guys (the more the better) together with deep pockets they could split the prototyping cost and do a mini-group buy.

Not to say I'd be in for this in the near future though...

BTW, how is the handling for coilovers typically? Mushy like Sprints (or is that Intrax?), or sporty like Eibachs?

Ground Control allows you to choose different spring rates for your application..

Lower number = Softer ride.

Higher number = Sporty ride..

yes..not only do they allow you to choose your own spring rates, the coil overs themselves are adjustable..so you can raise and lower them to your own comfort..not that you would be adjusting this all the time..it's a pain in the butt.

So you mean you can say to them "I'll take spring number 3, with 250 lbs/in for my fronts and for my rears I'll take blah blah blah"???

That is SO freaking COOL! Pricey, but COOL!

And then you can set the ride height on top of that - talk about customizable! I like this idea even more now, but I can't/shouldn't..... must..be... STRONG....

Yes..thats what both of the people i know with GC's did. They specified which spring rates they wanted in the front and the rear. If you think about GC..it's not all that expensive. These coil overs are MUCH better quality than most of what you see selling out there and you actually get to choose the stiffness of the spring rather than buying a set and not knowing wtf spring rates even are. (yayy..i got coil overs!!..really? what are the rates on the springs?..umm..i'll get back to ya)

I figure if you put aside $50 a week..you can have GC's in two months..two months isn't long ..cause if ya don't have jack now..waiting two months won't kill ya.
