Car shuts off frequently during driving
Hey everyone,
Really confused on what could be causing my car to shut off during driving or idling. Sometimes it drives perfectly fine and sometimes it just shuts off and will either turn right back on and drive or i will have to pull over and keep turning on until it will stay on and when it does come back on the rpm's wont go pass 2,500. Me and a friend did the whole watch the check engine light flash and it came up as code 55 (Not sure if i read it right) but its coming up as a tps sensor. Anyone know if this sounds correct or have any ideas?

Well i wash watching the engine light flash from the dash and it blinked 5 times fast then 3 times slow. My buddy was watching from under the dash so im not sure what color it flashed and he was getting the info offline on what the flashes meant. yes it starts fine in the morning

Fuel pump or possibly the filter. Car has enough gas in it in the morning to start and run, then runs whatever is left over out and is then starved for gas. Can't tell you about the only revving to 2500, still think the pump is maybe protecting itself from burnout.

oh and why O2?
when the car is cold the car runs in open loop...so it doesn't take a reading from the O2 sensor until it heats up. so it runs fine with open loop.
once it warms up the loop closes and the ECU takes readings from a buggy O2 and is all over the place with A/F.
this is my theory...it might not be the cause of the issue with the limited information given but it's a probable cause.

I had the same problem as I was restoring my car from being outside for a year. I would drive fine for like 30 min , then POP, like a small explosion car would turn off. We figured it was the cat , took it out and recently put a new magnaflow cat. Fuel filter and pump probably. Check your cylinders too by turning on the car and individual unplugging them. The cylinder that doesn't do anything is the problem sorry If I re said anything

I had that same problem on my 1990 Maxima. The car would turn off by itself while driving. Then it would start and run fine, then run crappy then turn off.
It turns out that my aftermarket cold air intake and was moving around when I drove, wrecking havoc with the MAF, and causing the car to turn off. I figured this out by wiggling the intake, which caused the MAF to move, letting in air behind the MAF, then shutting down.
So I replaced the MAF and put the OEM air filter back on and never had the problem again.
